It may be a brilliant attack but also may end the war in their defeat. Offensives often entail large losses. Time will tell.
For example 4 Ukrainian jets were reportedly shot down yesterday, likely a sign of increased air activity before the offensive.
4 of 70 jets maximum is about a 6% loss in 1 day. Very serious.

Draft evasion in Russia is becoming increasingly difficult. The new rules on electronic summonses have already entered into force. And they will affect not only conscripts, but also reservists. The first electronic summonses in test mode as part of the spring conscription are already being received by conscripts in St. Petersburg.
At the same time, the Russian military system cannot cope with those already mobilized for war. Those complain about the lack of training, uniforms and the complete incompetence of the commanders. About the realities of Putin’s
recruitment

Russian soldiers bring their weapons home from front line and open fire on people | Ukrainska Pravda
The Russian soldiers are taking away weapons from the combat zone; dozens of servicemen have already been put on trial for mishandling guns.
Source: Vyorstka, Russian Telegram channel
Details: Since the beginning of the full-scale war in February 2022, at least 42 servicemen in Russia have appeared in court for the appropriation, storage, transportation and carrying of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices (Articles 222 and 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Vyorstka has discovered this by studying the bases of all Russian garrison military courts.
Judging by the published verdicts, the Russian soldiers bring the firearms found at the front back home or keep unused cartridges and grenades for themselves. They carry them to military units, hiding them in armoured vests, backpacks and sleeping bags, then bring them to a secret place, and when going home on vacation, they take these weapons with them.
At least 18 servicemen who had come home from the war have already been convicted. Two dozen more are awaiting a court decision.
One soldier was sent to prison for 2.5 years. During the inspection at the checkpoint of the Crimean bridge, which he used to come home, 4 hand grenades, 5 bullets and a smoke grenade were found in his backpack. The soldier told investigators that he was carrying explosive devices “for personal safety.”
The rest of the servicemen have been fined for several tens of thousands of roubles and received suspended terms. Sometimes weapons were found during inspections at checkpoints, Road Patrol Service posts and train stations.
For example, when searching a soldier from Kursk, who was coming home through Crimea, an employee of the State Road Safety Inspectorate found a Val rifle, a Makarov pistol and 300 rounds of ammunition in his backpack.
In Samara Oblast, employees of the Road Patrol Service found a Makarov pistol and two loaded magazines in the car of a soldier from Chelyabinsk, in which he was coming home from the war.
At a train station in Voronezh Oblast, an F-1 hand grenade was seized from a soldier after he had his backpack scanned with an X-ray. Later, he told investigators that he wanted to use the grenade for fishing.
Those who manage to bring weapons home keep them in their apartments and cottage houses.
In Reutov (Moscow Oblast), two friends who came home from the war gave loaded magazines from a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Dragunov rifle to the owner of the apartment they rented. She took the ammunition, and a few days after that, she called the police.
In Bryansk, another soldier took a fragmentation grenade from the front, brought it to the service apartment and put it on a shelf in the corridor. On the same day, he had a fight with his wife. The policemen, who arrived at the scene, saw the grenade and called the bomb disposal experts.
One of the convicts got drunk and started firing his pistol in a public place. He found a Makarov pistol with cartridges and an RGD-5 grenade under the seat of a combat vehicle that returned to the unit after the battle. He kept the find in the ground, and three weeks after that, he dug up a gun, took it with him for a walk and started shooting into the air near a grocery store. The court assigned him compulsory works.
Several servicemen who took combat ammunition from the front managed to avoid criminal liability: their cases were closed. They convinced the court that they came to their senses and made amends by giving public lectures in their military units about responsibility for illegal possession of weapons and by donating 5 to 10 thousand roubles to help children.
In August 2022, in Smolensk Oblast, four armed men, one of them being a contracted soldier, attacked Ukrainian refugees at a temporary accommodation point. The same month, in Rostov-on-Don, a military officer shot a taxi driver from a Makarov pistol as the two argued about politics.
In December in Petrozavodsk, another soldier killed his wife with a handgun, Vyorstka emphasised.

Ukrainian Units ready for the offensive
April 20, 2023
A crucial point of this war is approaching. Ukrainian Army is preparing to launch an offensive to liberate its land, and we have prepared a list of potential units which might part of it.
Ukrainian command deliberately holds back a good chunk of its forces and stockpiles of ammunition. These units do not participate in active combat, but they are undergoing intense military training, either by foreign instructors in the west or by veteran soldiers in Ukraine.
This information reduces the number of possible units by at least half and helps us to identify Ukrainian units which might take part in the upcoming offensive.
However, it’s important to note that the list below doesn’t represent a full or official list of Ukrainian units for the offensive. It’s just the best guess :)
Air Assault Forces
Air Assault troops are the first in the line and are usually tasked to lead a spearhead.
-82nd AirAssault Brigade
The brigade trained months abroad, is equipped with Western weapons, and will surely participate in the offensive as a spearhead element.
-46th Airmobile Brigade
The majority of its forces are in the rear and will possibly lead a second spearhead.
-78th Regiment
The recently expanded Hearts unit is a unit full of skilled soldiers, and they’ll likely participate as well.
It’s possible that some separate battalions from other brigades might take part.
Ground Forces of Ukraine
Ground Forces usually follow Air Assault troops and provide support whenever necessary.
-1st Tank Brigade
Majority of the 1st Tank Brigade sits in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and trains with other mechanized brigades. The unit also received an unspecified number of Leopard 2A6 tanks.
-4th Tank Brigade
The tank brigade received Leopard 2A4 tanks and will act as the heavy brigade.
-17th Tank Brigade
The brigade is scattered across the frontline, but some tank battalions seem to be in the rear and might participate in the offensive.
-13th Jager Brigade
Soldiers train for airdrop operations and CQB combat. The brigade is still in the process of formation, but it should be ready for the offensive.
-21st Mechanized Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. They’ll probably act as a reserve, if at all.
-22nd Mechanized Brigade
Mechanized battalions train for combined assault. The brigade also has its own tank unit, which is rare among the newly formed brigades.
-23rd Mechanized Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. They’ll probably act as a reserve, if at all.
-31st Mechanized Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. They’ll probably act as a reserve, if at all.
-32nd Mechanized Brigade
The unit received western equipment, including M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The soldiers train for mechanized assaults and trench warfare.
-33rd Mechanized Brigade
The brigade received M113s and has its own tank unit. Mechanized battalions train for the frontline assault.
-41st Mechanized Brigade
The brigade is relatively new, and its soldiers will likely be in the reserve.
-47th Mechanized Brigade
One of the three main brigades that will lead the assault. There is no doubt that 47th Mechanized Brigade will participate in the upcoming offensive and act as heavy mechanize brigade.
-48th Artillery Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. If they take part, they’ll probably act as a reserve.
-49th Artillery Brigade
The artillery brigade received AS-90s and will almost certainly participate in the offensive.
-60th Mechanized Brigade
One battalion is deployed to Bakhmut, but the rest seems to be in the rear, preparing for the offensive.
-61st Mechanized Brigade
Soldiers are training for demining, mechanized assaults and combat support of other units.
-62nd Mechanized Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. They’ll probably act as a reserve, if at all.
-63rd Mechanized Brigade
The brigade is located in the rear. It’s possible the soldiers will take part of the upcoming offensive.
-88th Mechanized Brigade
Soldiers are training for mechanized assaults and crossing of water obstacles. It’s likely that 88th Mechanized Brigade will participate in the offensive.
-115th Mechanized Brigade
The brigade has been sitting in the rear for some time now. They received M113s in the meanwhile and continue to master skills.
-116th Mechanized Brigade
The brigade is almost formed and will be ready for the upcoming offensive.
-117th Mechanized Brigade
Soldiers of the brigade participated in the training abroad and received western weapons. The brigade will likely be ready for the offensive.
-118th Mechanized Brigade
the brigade is formed and ready to participate in the upcoming offensive.
-128th Mountain Brigade
Majority of the brigade seems to be in the rear, training trench warfare.
It’s possible that some separate battalions from other brigades might take part as well.
-Territorial Defense Brigade
It’s highly possible that several Territorial Defense Brigades will participate too. We’ll count with three.
Ukrainian Air Force
Consolidated Rifle Brigade
militaryland.net/ukraine/air-force/consolidated-rifle-brigade
Soldiers of the brigade train for CQB combat and support of other units. The unit might take part in the upcoming offensive.
Helicopters and jets of various Air Force Brigades will very likely support the ground troops and participate in the offensive.
-Ukrainian Naval Forces
Naval Forces have a similar role to Ukrainian Ground Troops, but maybe they will be tasked with landing on the other side of Dnipro or Crimea. We’ll find out soon enough.
-37th Marine Brigade
The brigade received western weapons and is training for mechanized assaults.
-38th Marine Brigade
militaryland.net/ukraine/ukrainian-navy/38th-marine-brigade
The brigade received western weapons and is training for mechanized assaults and trench warfare.
-The Raid, Surface and Support Ships Divisions will likely participate as well, depends on the scale of the operation.
Special Operations Forces
SOF are the eyes and ears. They do operate behind enemy lines and prepare grounds for the offensive.
-Special Operations Center South
Who else knows the south better than SSO South.
National Guard of Ukraine
Ukrainian National Guard has only a few pieces of heavy equipment and will likely follow Ukrainian Mechanized Brigades with main task to secure towns.
-Azov Assault Brigade
At least two battalions of the brigade are ready.
-Kara-Dag Brigade
militaryland.net/ukraine/national-guard/kara-dag-brigade
The brigade from Zaporizhzhia is named after a mountain located in Crimea.
It’s possible that some separate battalions from other brigades might take part as well:
Special Police Forces
Lyut Brigade
-Ukrainian Special Police Forces will very likely be tasked with the liberation of towns due to their CQB skills.
Border Guards of Ukraine
-Stalevy Kordon Brigade
There is a little to know about the brigade. If they take part, they’ll probably act as a reserve.
It’s highly possible that Special Purpose detachments of Ukrainian Border Guards will take part as well.
Main Directorate of Intelligence
-Kraken Special Detachment
Kraken will surely participate in the offensive.
-10th Special Forces Detachment
Ukrainian elite detachment closely cooperates with SSO. They’ll be behind enemy lines or tasked with the liberation of towns.

Latvia to deliver all available Stinger MANPADS to Ukraine
EUROPEAN PRAVDA
FRIDAY, 21 APRIL 2023, 21:38
At the meeting of the Contact Group on the Defence of Ukraine on Friday, the Minister of Defence of Latvia, Ināra Mūrniece, announced the decision to hand over all Latvian Stinger portable anti-aircraft missile systems to Kyiv.
Source: European Pravda
“Latvia responded to Ukraine’s request for the supply of air defense systems and decided to transfer to Ukraine all the Stinger air defense equipment that we still have. We will do everything possible to deliver them to Ukraine as soon as possible,” Mūrniece said.
In addition, Latvia continues to implement the training program for Ukrainian soldiers.
“Our goal was to double the number of Ukrainian soldiers trained in Latvia this year compared to 2022. Now we see that we will be able to train even more servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at various levels. I am certain that by the end of the year, Latvia will train almost 3,000 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the minister said.
At the same time, the Minister of Defence of Latvia emphasised that Riga, together with other allies, is working on a new initiative to train soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Latvia.
The last time Latvia announced the delivery of Stinger MANPADS to Ukraine was in January of this year.
The Stinger is one of the most advanced and effective air defence systems, which is also used by many of Latvia’s allies, such as the United States, the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and Lithuania.
Military aid to Ukraine from Latvia has already reached 1% of its GDP and exceeded 300 million euros.
Until the Spring rains stop and the ground dries, how will there be any counterattack of significance?
Ukraine ready for Counterattack.
How much more money from the U.S. is needed for this “Counterattack”?
