Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard J. Riordan, who led the city through some of its most challenging times of the late 20th century, has died at the age of 92.
The city’s last Republican mayor, Riordan was elected in 1993 and served until 2001. He is credited with helping L.A. rebound from the 1992 Rodney King riots and managing the immediate response and recovery from the devastating 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake.
As a political moderate, Riordan emerged as a civil and political donor after making a fortune as an investment banker and became a candidate for mayor of L.A. at the age of 62.

“The city’s last Republican mayor...”
Yeah, no need to follow that with “to date”
He was a great mayor but a RINO. I voted for him over Bill Simon in the 2002 primary because he had a better chance of beating Gray “Gumby” Davis.
I remember parking, taking the elevator down, running to the building, going through the glass doors one 9 AM and there’s Riordan, when he was mayor at some get together. I just rushed past.
I lived in LA during the time and it was the last time LA thrived
Riordan owned the historic The Original Pantry Cafe. I ate there a couple of times, pretty good food.
My God! The vax has struck again!
“My God! The vax has struck again!”
I happy that you finally got with the program. There are no other causes of death.
Any republican mayors were a 1000 times more competent and capable than all the democrat mayors put together.
I also remember a white, blond TV newscaster expressing disbelief during the campaign that an old, white man could possibly represent "today's Los Angeles."
Another Sudden Adult Death victim. Must have been the clot shot....
Disregard I had a dyslexic moment and saw 29 vice 92.... Lucky bastard.
A Pantry Story It was a Thanksgiving Eve and the health department closed the pantry The only time in History. I think Riordan was still mayor.
Riordan went down to the place and they all scrubbed it up and down. Riordan had an inspector there at 6 AM (for those who don’t know, the Pantry opened in the 1920s and never closed 24-7, till that night. Still there.
They passed the inspection and opened for breakfast that Thanksgiving morning. Technically, they were opened both days but for the hours it took to clean up and pass the inspection.
PS: Riordan was a good mayor because he was a good business man. Sound familiar?
Tricky Dick. RIP.
There ya go...
Mayor Riordan was no conservative...But, I still liked him...I think he did a good job as Mayor...RIP to Mayor...
I voted for Mayor in the GOP primary as well...Back then, there was no open primary in CA...Only registered Republicans voted in the GOP primary...
Mayor Riordan was involved in a campaign to vote out Justice Rose Bird in 1986...She was voted out...She was very soft on crime...
I loved his pragmatic streak and in my humble opinion, he wasn’t conservative but, he was conservative when it counted.
