An Intermarium-style alliance between Poland and Ukraine would have enough economic power & military capabilities to be strong enough to fend off Russia.

Add in Belarus and the Baltic states and you can rebuild "The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth" of the 17th and 18th century. Somehow I don't think Russia would be the only country that would have a problem with such a union.
