.22 LR Ammo Prices Gradually Falling; Supply is Meeting Demand
AmmoLand ^ | April 6, 2023 | Dean Weingarten

About once a week, I visit a local Walmart to monitor ammunition prices. This time, there was a significant change. Walmart rolled back the price of some bulk-packed .22 LR ammunition. The product was Federal Automatch, 40 grain, in a 325 bulk pack. The price was $18.97 or 5.8 cents per cartridge. The price had been $21.16, or 6.5 cents per cartridge. This is roughly a 10% reduction in the price.

Most days, this correspondent will look at ammunition prices online. They are not quite as good an indicator because shipping costs must be included. Everyone online now charges state sales tax, which no longer makes much of a difference. Online prices were even lower, with the lowest costs for the cheapest ammunition at exactly 5 cents per cartridge for Armscor .22 LR 36 grain hollowpoint, bolt action only. From the indicated supplier, shipping costs were included in the price.  A purchaser had to buy a full 5,000 round case to obtain the 5 cent per round price.

In my experience, the Federal Automatch is a bit more reliable ammunition than the Armscor 36 grain. Other people’s experiences may vary.

Since the ammunition bubble started in 2012, ammunition prices have gone up and down in response to overwhelming, then muted, demand. The demand seems linked to political threats to impose significant infringements on rights protected by the Second Amendment.

The ammunition companies have increased .22 Long Rifle production by about 40% since 2012, from about 5 billion rounds of .22 LR per year to 7 Billion rounds per year at present.  Both Aguila Ammunition and Vista Outdoors (Federal and CCI) have increased production substantially.

Much specialty .22 ammunition is still difficult to obtain, but shelves are being stocked with more and more ammunition.

I now just carry my Ruger SR22. Its kind of a picky eater though. I run CCI stingers or velocitors.

That's a nice pistol. Stingers or Velocitors are what you should have in it if you're carrying. I've been considering carrying my M&P .22 Compact. That thing's a machine -- I've run thousands of rounds through it, only Mini-Mags and Stingers, and it's never had a malfunction of any kind. Not once.

I have tested 65-year-old .22 LR. It worked very well.

Sorry, was driving to work. Yeah it was a sale price only deal and they limited it to 3 boxes. Magtech ammo. Still I took it as a good sign that they were selling it at that price.

You just can’t beat CCI. I used to run their maxi mags in my Keltec PS 90 .22 mag. I also like Hornady.

Believe it or not, I found a Cheetos case box full at an estate liquidation last week in rural north Georgia.

At least 60 boxes, ranging from five in a box to a full 24 in a box, all different kinds, mostly turkey shot, 3 inch magnum.

I've not had a chance yet to look at all of them, but they seem to be in good shape...a few with case corrosion, deteriorating cardboard boxes, etc.

Minor stuff...but got it for 22 bucks.

Also found a milk crate full of 12 gauge, standard, all bird shot.About 25 boxes for 10 bucks, plus a real good milk crate.

Lot's of other goodies firearm related, Wolf springs and screws, still labeled, still in the baggie, trigger bows, grip safeties, all kinds of internal doo-dads for 1911.

1911 grips, mostly crap but at least two good stag sets and several faux-stag.

Five boxes of really old Frankfort Arsenal .45 ACP that I'm kinda afraid to shoot.

Lots, lots more, all goodies that I would never have expected to find in a estate liquidation, but there ya go.I felt pretty good about it, as there were several dealer-types nosing around, buying inventory for the "Worlds Longest Yard Sale" coming up in May.

Totally unexpected on my part, as I had come to look at a bucket for a Kubota tractor.

Ended up spending all my cash and would have spent more if I'd had it.

Just my lucky day, I guess.

The weirdest thing I found was an old "Multi-tool".

Dates back to the '20's or so.

Made by Armitage, has four wrench heads (weird sizes), four screwdriver heads, a pry bar, a spark plug tool for HUGE sparkplugs and a couple other things on it.

All in all, one of those days that come along maybe a couple times in a lifetime.

You might consider Aguila Interceptors. They are a tiny amount hotter than Velocitors.

.410 is usually a bit harder to find than 12 or 20 gauge.

Estate sales are a good place to purchase ammo.

Gun shops will not restock ammunition.

Reloading-a good job for old stay-at-home seniors. Make a little money.
= = =

Selling home made reloads?

I would not advertise that.

Probably illegal in many areas.

And how trustworthy and careful is the reloader?

Revelation Brand, at Western Auto.

LR was 49 cents per box of 50.

Shorts were 47 cents.

And I was aged 12 to 14, and purchased them, no questions asked.

Thanks! I'll pick some up and see how they run through the M&P.

I love .22s -- always have. And I've always wanted a revolver, so that may be next on the list.

If it was halfway decently stored, I expect it would.

Still have federal bulk pack .22 I bought in probably 1985.

500 for 7.99. Still has the price sticker on it. Maybe 100 left.

Just bought a .17 hmr. Love it! Savage 93 bvss. Tack driver! It’ll do at a 100 what the .22 will do at 50. And is effective out to 200 and beyond. Really unless you shoot a lot, a whole lot, rimfire rounds are still pretty inexpensive.

That was about 25 years ago. When you consider the inflation since then the current prices are cheaper in many cases.
