SSU shuts down bot farm in Kropyvnytskyi with over 3,000 fake accounts for information sabotage against Ukraine
12:00, 7 April 2023
https://ssu.gov.ua/en/novyny/sbu-likviduvala-u-kropyvnytskomu-botofermu-yaka-stvoryla-ponad-3-tysiachi-feikovykh-akauntiv-dlia-informdyversii-proty-ukrainy

In Kropyvnytskyi, the SSU cyber units dismantled a bot farm that worked for the russian special services.

As a result of operational and investigative activities, the organizer of the enemy cell was detained. The man moved from Zaporizhzhia to Kirovohrad oblast after the start of the full-scale invasion.

There, he began to create anonymous social media accounts and sell them via the darknet. The specialized hardware was installed in a rented apartment in a residential area in Kropyvnytskyi.

The average cost of one bot was UAH 200 (USD 6).
The bot farm organizer created almost 3,000 fake accounts, which he planned to sell for a total of over half a million UAH.

His main ‘clients’ were representatives of russian special services and pro-kremlin propagandists.

The aggressor needed the bots to spin disinformation on the situation at the front supposedly on behalf of Ukrainian citizens and to discredit Ukrainian Defence Forces.
In this way, the enemy attempted to undermine the internal political situation in different regions of Ukraine.

During the search of the suspect’s rented apartment, the SSU found:
• computers and specialized equipment;
• 3,000 SIM cards used in the unlawful activities.

SSU investigators served the offender a notice of suspicion under Article 436-2 of the CCU (justification, recognition as legitimate, denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).

The decision on additional qualification of the suspect’s actions and choosing custody as a measure of restraint is pending.

The SSU carried out the activities under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Following SSU’s investigation, court issues first guilty verdict against judge who deports Crimeans from temporarily occupied peninsula
13:30, 5 April 2023
https://ssu.gov.ua/en/novyny/zavdiaky-sbu-v-ukraini-vpershe-zasudzheno-suddiu-yaka-deportuie-krymchan-z-tymchasovo-okupovanoho-pivostrova

State security
Protecting Ukraine together

The SSU jointly with the National Police investigators have collected irrefutable evidence against the occupation ‘judge’ who facilitates forced deportation of Crimeans from the temporarily captured peninsula.

Since 2014, she has made ‘court’ decisions on forced deportation of over 20 local residents from the Crimea.
Following the investigation, the court sentenced the ‘official’ to 10 years in prison.

The convicted offender is a former Ukrainian judge who after the occupation of the peninsula voluntarily cooperated with the russian invaders.

For this, the enemy appointed her the head of the so-called ‘Armyansk City Court of the Republic of Crimea’.

In this ‘position’, the woman has made illegal decisions to deport civilians for supposedly ‘not having documents’ and not following the ‘rules of stay’ in the occupied territory.
Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the court found the accused guilty under Article 438.1 of the CCU (violation of laws and customs of war).

The sentence will start on the day the convict is arrested.
The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol city.

NATO poses a threat to Russian imperialism not Russian security
By Peter Dickinson
April 6, 2023
https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/nato-poses-a-threat-to-russian-imperialism-not-russian-security/

Finland has just become the thirty-first member of NATO and the silence from across the border in Russia is deafening.

For more than a year, the Kremlin has been using the distant prospect of Ukrainian NATO membership to justify the largest European conflict since World War II. In stark contrast, Moscow has offered virtually no resistance whatsoever to neighboring Finland joining the alliance, despite the fact that this has more than doubled the length of NATO’s shared border with Russia.

Russia’s apparent lack of concern over Finland’s NATO accession raises obvious questions about the validity of Vladimir Putin’s efforts to portray the invasion of Ukraine as a reasonable response to creeping NATO enlargement. If Putin genuinely felt NATO posed a security threat to Russia, he could have attempted to derail Finland’s membership bid via a combination of diplomatic and military pressure. At the very least, he could have dramatically increased the Russian army presence in the region. Instead, he did next to nothing.

During the period since Helsinki’s May 2022 NATO application, Moscow has largely limited itself to grumbling about the accession process. At the same time, Russia has reportedly withdrawn up to 80% of its forces from the Finnish border zone. “The drawdown we’ve seen from this region in the past seven months is very significant. Russia had this ground force posture facing us for decades that is now effectively just gone,” a senior Nordic defense official told Foreign Policy in September 2022.

Kremlin officials have since reacted to confirmation of Finnish membership by vowing to strengthen Russia’s military potential in the border area, but this belated bluster merely serves to highlight how underwhelming Russia’s overall response has been. The contrast with Moscow’s devastating use of force in nearby Ukraine could hardly be greater.

Why has Putin remained so calm over the NATO membership of one neighbor while waging a major war over the unlikely NATO aspirations of another? After all, even with the Russian army heavily committed in Ukraine, Putin still has vast additional military, diplomatic, cyber, and economic resources at his disposal and could conceivably have opposed Finland’s NATO bid in a wide range of ways. This inconsistency has little to do with legitimate security concerns. Instead, it reflects the unapologetic imperialism that shapes Putin’s personal worldview and defines modern Russia’s national identity.

Ever since the early years of his reign, Putin has made no secret of his bitterness over the Soviet collapse, which he has always viewed as a Russian defeat. In 2005, when he famously referred to the disintegration of the USSR as “the biggest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,” he stressed that it was a tragedy for “the Russian people” and the millions of Russians who suddenly found themselves living beyond Russia’s borders in newly independent countries such as Ukraine. Putin went even further in 2021, lamenting the fall of the USSR as “the collapse of historical Russia under the name of the Soviet Union.” In other words, he regards the entire Soviet era as a continuation of the Czarist Russian Empire, and sees the settlement of 1991 as anything but final.

Putin’s sense of historical injustice has led to an unhealthy obsession with Ukraine, which he insists is an inherent part of historical Russia that has been subjected to artificial separation. He is fond of claiming that Ukrainians are in fact Russians (“one people”), and took the unusual but revealing step in July 2021 of publishing a lengthy essay arguing against the legitimacy of Ukrainian statehood.

This fixation has been further fueled by fears that the emergence of a democratic Ukraine could serve as a catalyst for similar changes inside Russia itself. Putin remains haunted by the pro-democracy uprisings that swept Central Europe in the late 1980s while he was a young KGB officer in East Germany, and views modern Ukraine’s embrace of democracy as a direct threat to his own authoritarian regime. It is no coincidence that in the buildup to last year’s invasion, Putin began referring to Ukraine as an intolerable “anti-Russia.”

Over the past 13 months of full-scale war, Putin’s imperial objectives in Ukraine have become increasingly evident. Has has compared his invasion to the eighteenth century imperial conquests of Russian Czar Peter the Great, and has repeatedly spoken of returning historical Russian lands while attempting to annex four partially occupied Ukrainian regions representing almost 20% of the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, his army has imposed brutal policies of russification throughout occupied Ukraine, complete with summary executions, forced deportations, the suppression of Ukrainian national symbols, and widespread use of torture against anyone deemed a potential opponent of Russian rule.

Putin ‘dismisses top general amid Ukraine failures’
ES- Evening Standard
David Bond Deputy Political Editor
4-6-2023
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/putin-dismisses-top-general-ukraine-war-latest-news-b1072648.html

It is “highly likely” Vladimir Putin has axed one of his top generals following Russia’s stalled invasion of Ukraine, British defence chiefs said on Thursday.

In its daily intelligence update, the UK’s Ministry of Defence said Colonel-General Rustam Muradov had probably been dismissed as commander of Russia’s Eastern Group of Forces.

The assessment comes as the Kremlin’s forces continue to suffer heavy losses with Ukraine’s military continuing to put up fierce resistance backed by western weapon supplies.
The MOD intelligence chiefs noted his departure was the most senior military dismissal of 2023 so far - as Russia’s push for a fresh offensive has suffered a series of setbacks.

The MoD said: “The EGF under Muradov has suffered exceptionally heavy casualties in recent months as its poorly conceived assaults repeatedly failed to capture the Donetsk Oblast town of Vuhledar.

“The operations attracted intense public criticism from across the spectrum of Russian commentators - including Muradov’s own troops.

“Muradov took over the EGF after its disastrous attempt to assault Kyiv from the north-west during the initial full-scale invasion.

“He is the most senior Russian military dismissal of 2023 so far, but more are likely as Russia continues to fail to achieve its objectives in the Donbas.”
News of Col-Gen Muradov’s removal was first reported in the Moscow Times but has so far not been confirmed by Russia’s Ministry of Defence.

Russia’s efforts to take the coal-mining town of Vuhledar earlier this year led to heavy Russian casualties. It was reported that dozens of Russian tanks were destroyed after being ordered to advance in single-file because of a lack of demining equipment.

But claims that Col-Gen Muradov has now been removed by President Putin points to more internal tensions among senior Russian military leaders over the progress of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russian forces have also suffered heavy losses in their bid to seize the town of Bakhmut, also in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, which has been at the centre of intense fighting for months.

On Wednesday western officials suggested the killing of Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in St Petersburg on Sunday reflected internal divisions in Russia over the war.
“It shows internally in Russia there are divisions,” the officials said.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted Russian forces are not in control of Bakhmut but said Kyiv faced a difficult situation in defending the war torn town.
“We are in Bakhmut and the enemy does not control it,” Zelensky said.

“For me, the most important is not to lose our soldiers and of course if there is a moment of even hotter events and the danger we could lose our personnel because of encirclement - of course the corresponding correct decisions will be taken by generals there,” Zelensky said, apparently referring to withdrawal.

In an updatye on Thursday, Ukraine’s military said Russian forces were storming Bakhmut with the intention of taking full control of it, adding that Bakhmut, along with the towns of Avdiivka and Maryinka to the southwest, were “the epicentre of hostilities”.

Ukrainian military commanders have stressed the importance of holding Bakhmut and other cities and inflicting losses on Russian troops before an anticipated counter-offensive against them in the coming weeks or months.

Meanwhile European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to discuss Ukraine during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday.

Before the trip, Mr Macron agreed in a phone call with US President Joe Biden to engage Beijing to hasten the end of the biggest war in Europe since World War Two.
The US and NATO have said China is considering sending arms to Russia, which Beijing has denied.

In a tweet on Thursday morning Mr Macron said: “I am convinced that China has a major role to play in building peace. This is what I have come to discuss, to move forward on.”

Ukraine’s Chief Intelligence Directorate intercepts occupiers’ conversation about hits in Russian Zapesochye
Olena Roshchina
Friday, 7 April 2023, 20:16
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/04/7/7396943/

The Chief Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine intercepted a conversation in which a Russian serviceman talked about the large number of victims among the occupiers in the village of Zapesochye in Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation.

Source: Chief Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine

Quote from the Chief Intelligence Directorate: “A Russian serviceman talks about the large number of victims among the occupiers as a result of the ‘unrest’ in the village of Zapesochye in Bryansk Oblast of the Russian Federation.”

Quote from the recorded man: “Information from Zapesochye. A bunch of ambulances; they wrecked the border guards, the military. They were standing somewhere either in Zapesochye itself or near Zapesochye.

I don’t know about the dead, but they say there’s a s**t ton of wounded, because there’s a f**k ton of ambulances there. So, they hit f**king well, damn it.”

Details: According to the Chief Intelligence Directorate, “riots took place” in the Pogar district of the Bryansk region of Russia. Not only the military personnel were wounded, but a Russian armoured personnel carrier was disabled as well. Other machinery, equipment, and property of the occupiers was damaged.

The Chief Intelligence Directorate believes that the latest events in Bryansk Oblast indicate that armed protest against the current regime of Vladimir Putin “is possible within the Russian Federation”.

Quote from the Chief Intelligence Directorate: “The Russian volunteer corps are not the first to carry out such measures, the scale of which is only growing. The fighters struck a military facility and communicated with the local population. As a result of the insurgents’ actions, the civilian population was not harmed.”

Background:

-On 6 April, the governor of Bryansk Oblast of Russia, Aleksandr Bogomaz, stated that a group of Ukrainian saboteurs tried to break into the oblast’s territory near the village of Sluchovsk.

- “performed combat missions” in Bryansk Oblast.

-Sluchovsk and Zapesochye are located not far from each other and close to the border of the Russian Federation with Ukraine.
