You can have affirmative hires in fields like sales, etc., but when it comes to hard sciences and skills-based jobs, you need to hire based on knowledge and merit, not DEI.
Imagine if the NBA imposed a DEI hiring policy that 30% of players must be transgendered?

"We think that science depends upon meritocracy, which DEI undermines, perhaps fatally" We don't 'think' -- we know its a meritocracy. Because it has to be. Nature doesn't reward stupidity kindly. And when these DIE hires ultimately can't do the math, and they don't have any PWGs (that's "Privileged White Guys") to do it for them, rockets are going to be exploding on the launch pad.
And the best part? When things catch fire, those large-and-in-charge will blame it on the -- you guessed it! -- Privileged White Guys!

Back when Nixon’s DoJ extorted AT&T into implementing Affirmative Action and legitmatizing the EEOC*, I worked for a subsidiary of AT&T. While discussing the situation with an old timer on the job, he prophesied that, “No matter how you shake it, the cream will always come to the top.”
He was wrong.

A disaster for STEM progrmas in the U.S., not for the rest of the world. China and India have a billion smart individuals who will step into STEM jobs while U.S. graduates serve coffee and tea.

Objectivity, they suggest, has been replaced with a hyper-fixation on identity.Well, that is unsettling.

I very much hope you're wrong. When my son recently took computer science courses from the same university I got my BS in CS, he said that the math and CS courses still taught none of the woke crap (just like when I was in school). But the "core" liberal arts courses were full of it (perhaps even more than when I was in school). Maybe that's an Alabama thing. Or maybe it's common for real STEM courses to still avoid woke crap unless it's a hard lefty school (like MIT) where woke is in all courses.

DEI isn’t the only factor destroying STEM in the western world. Many colleges (including my own Alma Mater), knuckled under very quickly against the outraged cries from the humanities that STEM must NOT exclude Arts and Humanities, and hence, STEM quickly become STEAM.

They should be required to have half the players midgets!

Not surprising when you consider that most college\university administrators come from the non-STEM side of the aisle.
For public colleges\universities I blame the trustees and state legislatures. College administrations can usually keep the trustees & state legislators under their control with good SWAG - good football & basketball seats and other goodies.

You can have affirmative hires in fields like sales, etc. Competence matters even there. "DEI" destroys EVERYTHING it infests.
