Animal “shelters” are the greatest slaughterer of pets in the country. They are funded, and operated, by the very organizations you may support.

There are very few “no-kill” shelters.

These shelters are where murder of pets is considered just another form of income.

Approximately 5,000 animal shelters operate in the United States. They are nonprofit agencies. Some of them are run by local governments’ animal control services and others act as completely independent entities. There isn't a national agency that oversees animal shelters; however, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and other nonprofit organizations that are devoted to animal welfare provide the funding and guidelines to help animal shelters operate effectively.

Suspect any animal organization you support, when it comes to mass killings.

I agree that people should look into any group they give money to. But I fear that the effect of your post will be to make some jump to inaccurate conclusions about shelters.

For almost two decades, I have worked full time for free helping manage a non-profit no-kill shelter, where we have saved and rehomed over 20,000 dogs and cats. Many individuals volunteer their time, money, and talents to make it work. We euthanize animals only when they are suffering from disease or injury with no chance whatsoever of sucessful treatment, and in very rare cases (I remember only one in the last 15 years) when a dog is irredeemably vicious. Even then we agonize over each case, and get input from multiple veterinarians. We take in all sorts of mutts and cats, including older ones and those needing special care.

The HSUS and ASPCA have never given us a penny. Our funding comes from private donations and what we can eke out of our Thrift Shop. Our Board is unpaid and we are all expected to put in real work.

The worst killers of animals tend to be PUBLIC shelters operated by City and County governments (if government excels at anything, it’s killing). Typically, their mandate is to protect the public FROM animals, which are cast as “vermin” to be “controlled”. After many years of pressure, we now are fortunate in having County Animal Control Officers here who actually care about animals and cooperate with us and other rescues to save almost all the animals that enter their custody.

In this state, the law requires any shelter, public or private, to hold an animal surrendered as a stray without a collar, for a minimum of 10 days, so that ownes have a chance to find their pets. For NYC to slaughter a dog only 30 minutes after stray surrender by a non-owner is hideous and likely criminal. The website of “Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC)” says:

“If an animal comes to us as a stray, we will hold for 72 hours to give a potential owner time to reclaim. We also will check for a microchip and search through various databases for any reports of lost pets that may fit the description of that animal.”

NY pet owners should make a lot of noise over killing this dog. ACC probably has a whole list of excuses ready to justify killing pets.
