You could be right, but my understanding is that it wasn’t paid from campaign funds, but prosecutors are claiming that it was a campaign expenditure (since it helped his campaign), so they want to prosecute him for not reporting it as a campaign expenditure. It’s a really weak legal argument, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try.
I don’t claim perfect knowledge of the prosecutors’ “reasoning”.
I think that’s their case. Beyond weak.
