That’s exactly the way it was. It wasn’t ‘cool’ to like the Carpenters and practically everyone did.

Yep, they were *everywhere* on the pop/rock radio dial in the early 1970s. They made a large pile of money for Herb Alpert.

I'm not sure if it's my personal favorite of theirs, but the song I most often think of when the Carpenters are mentioned is "Yesterday Once More". The song was written to evoke feelings of nostalgia back then... and it hits even harder now.

thanks for mentioning that, Paul Williams wrote some great songs. I didn’t know he wrote “Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Out in the Country” for Three Dog Night - amazing times for music back then.

Music is subjective but everyone is missing this one, all you get from love is a love song. Perfect production, ‘nuff said with her voice....

One that I was surprised didn’t get mentioned was ‘Rainy Days and Mondays.’ That was a huge hit in it’s day.

Loved her voice. “Goodbye to Love” one of my favorites.

Agreed. Another FReeper just this week turned me on to a songwriter named Rod Temperton. Keyboardist for Heatwave. Wrote their big hits and then some, including Off the Wall and Thriller for MJ.

I didn’t put Joplin in my top ten all time female vocalists because her life was simply too short. I don’t think it’s enough to judge a career on. Same with why I wouldn’t put Judy Garland in an all time more-traditional “pop” vocalist list or Jim Morrison in an all time male vocalist list.
