For three decades, Barbara Kugler has lived less than a block from the Norfolk Southern railway line that crosses through East Palestine, Ohio. Up until this month, the sound of an oncoming freight train’s warning whistle—long, long, short, long—used to be a comfort.
But now when she hears it, she tenses.
“For thirty years that sound meant home. It was part of the rhythm of our lives,” says Kugler, 52, who was born and raised in a town one mile away and spends her days minding her grandkids. “Now I find myself flinching every time I hear it because I don’t know what is coming next.”
Just before 9 p.m. on February 3, the noise of a train screeching to a halt followed by a large explosion jolted Kugler and her husband off the couch and out onto the street.

they will never probably know, and none of the deaths and/or illnesses will be properly compensated.
At least there are lots of lawyers will be for decades though.
The link to Citizen Free Press which has the vid of J.D. Vance scraping the bottom of the creek and oily “stuff” coming up is pretty disturbing, too. I wouldn’t be drinking anything out of that water table...
Buttjuice said it was ok and he would never steer people to engage in behavior hazardous to ones health
We live in a “toxic” world where we are surrounded by chemicals. We really do not understand what the ramifications of them are to our long term health (physical and mental).
We have for years heard about “fluoride” in the ground water. Now we hear about methamphetamine, fentanyl, and pharmaceuticals showing up in municipal water supplies.
We have seen an explosion of mental and physical health maladies and it seems to be getting worse..... why? Could it be all the chemicals?
The simple truth is that we don’t know. We know “something” is happening, but we can never quite put our finger on what it is. There are even potentially hazardous chemicals in “cosmetics”!
The Romans did not know that lead could be harmful to your health. They not only used lead pipes, but lead cookware became a status symbol. Today we use non-stick cookware, “recycled metals, or we microwave different plastic(s) containers with food.
That new “foam” mattress that off-gases for the first few weeks while you sleep on it? Chemicals. They wrap them in plastic shortly after they are made and unwrap it when you are going to sleep on it. That “new car smell”? Off-gassing chemicals. That spray-on sunscreen? Full of chemicals to include heavy metals.
More and more our nation is outsourcing everything from nutritional supplements to clothing to China or other 3rd world nations with little to no environmental controls. We are even getting our food from these nations. Do we know what we are putting into our bodies?
Lead, mercury, PCB’s, asbestos, firefighting foam(s), fuel additives, and the list goes on and on. Today’s great “new thing” is only a decade or two away from being a health hazard.
I feel bad for these folks in Ohio and downstream from this because their illusion of “safety” has forever been destroyed, but all of us might want to consider the world around us when it comes to “chemical safety”.
For the wages of Syn is death.
