I asked ChatGPT: “Does the transporter on Star Trek kill every person who uses it, and then manufacture an exact duplicate?”

I asked ChatGPT: “Does the transporter on Star Trek kill every person who uses it, and then manufacture an exact duplicate?”

This is the answer that it gave:

“No, the transporter on Star Trek does not kill every person who uses it, and then manufacture an exact duplicate. The transporter is a device used to teleport people and objects from one location to another. It works by breaking down the molecular structure of the subject and then reassembling it at the destination. The goal of the transporter is to safely transport the subject from one place to another, not to kill them and create a duplicate.”

“In the Star Trek franchise, the transporter is generally considered a safe and reliable technology, and it is widely used for transportation purposes. While there have been instances in which the transporter has malfunctioned or been used in unusual ways, leading to strange and sometimes dangerous consequences, these instances are few and far between.”

“It is important to remember that the Star Trek franchise is a work of fiction, and the depiction of the transporter and its effects on people and objects is not meant to be taken as a scientific explanation of how teleportation would actually work in the real world. The transporter is a science fiction device that is used to drive the story and create exciting and imaginative scenarios for the characters.”

One college professor, who marked papers created by ChatGPT said that the quality of papers produced by ChatGPT was on par with any first year student.

More importantly, what do you think of the transporter on Star Trek? Is it time to invest?

Does ChatGPT produce the same essay in response to the same prompt, or does it adjust as it gains experience with any given user?

The technology probably warrants mandatory watermarking, probably invisible to the user, that would identify it when a submitted paper is run through automated anti-plagiarism screening systems.

Ask a follow up question: Does the transporter also transport the soul?

What is disassembling everyone down to the molecular level?
Sounds like killing to me. Talk about Newspeak.
Oh, yeah, Joe got chomped up by the shark, but we’ll reassemble his parts...after we gut the shark, but Joe ain’t dead.

If you want to mess with it, then ask how a person can be considered alive when he’s been completely pulverized into his constituent molecules, and then pursue the question relentlessly. The AI doesn’t hold up very well to that sort of scrutiny.

CGP Grey argues that for the Star Trek transporter to not be a murder-cloning device, the soul has to exist separate from the body.

For materialistic atheists this gets uncomfortably close to the Judeo-Christian view.

YEAH, RIGHT! TELL THAT TO ANDRE DELAMBRE, THE CANADIAN GENIUS WHO PIONEERED TELEPORTATION BACK IN THE LATE 1950’S! HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR STAR TREK! HAD HIS NOTEBOOKS NOT BEEN FOUND...

HOW SOON WE FORGET!

So, the answer from ChatGPT would mean that the transporter violates a very important law in Quantum Mechanics called the “no broadcast” principle which extends the “no clone” principle. The qbits of the sender and the qbits of the receiver can never be in identical states at the same time which would be needed to preserve the concept of “identity”.

Teleportation is done in the lab using entangled particles that are “connected” by their probability matrix, but you can’t teleport one particle. One particle has to be realized at each end of the experiment.

If the teleporter destroyed (killed) the entangled sender qbits after the entangled receiver qbits were recovered, it would be a totally new identity which is allowed by QM. This was the theme of a great move, “The Prestige”, which showed how Nikola Tesla would have developed the process for a magician. Hint: It didn’t end well for the sender.
