Dynamic situation in the Atlantic. The pair formed by the tanker Kama and the frigate Admiral Gorshkov split up in the Bay of Biscay.
The Kama continued southwards, shadowed by the Portuguese patrol vessel NRP Sines (P362), passing the Azores islands late last week.
The Admiral Gorshkov, instead, headed west, shadowed by the Portuguese frigate NRP Bartolomeu Dias (F333) and is now 1300 kilometres west of the island of Flores, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

I doubt it means anything. I always assume there are three or four Russian submarines off our coast... I live ten miles from PavPaws... that’s the Air Force facility that tracks submarines in the Pacific.
AT least she’s not rusty.
Very new class... bright and sparkly...
Frigate Admiral Gorshkov started combat duty

Sleep well, all.
“one feature of the Zircon hypersonic missiles is the ability to reliably overcome todayâs advanced air defence and missile defence systems. The missileâs flight speed exceeds Mach 9, and the range is over 1,000 kilometres.”
Russia, at least a decade ago, began designing superweapons which slip past our defense alerts.
This is one. Mach 9. They say you can’t see it at all, just what happens after it hits.
What is “combat duty” ??? Anyone?
“They say you canât see it at all,”
The Ukraine War has proved that what Russia says its weapons can do and what they actually do are very different things.
The ship is on assignment to participate in maneuvers with the Chinese and South African navies.
If anything this is Putin reaching out and letting us know he can touch us. These missiles on this class ship are probably outside the competency of our defenses.
THAT is a good looking boat. Be a shame if something happened to it.
You missed some amazing videos, clearly.
“new Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles”
They named them “Zircon”? Guess they don’t realize what connotation “cubic zirconium” has in the USA. Not exactly a name that makes me think they will perform as advertised.
Interesting. The Admiral Gorshkov is bigger, but the Bartolomeu Dias is very slightly faster (as of when the Dutch operated it) and just came off of upgrades.
No doubt full of 1970's era tech.
Last century the US had an anti-ICBM system called Sprint. Within a few seconds it would glow a very bright white hot. Easy to spot. At those speeds changing course is very difficult. So the Zircon (isn’t that a faux diamond?) Must travel at higher altitudes to avoid burning up. Plus the ionized atmosphere around it makes communication difficult like with reentering spacecraft. Russian propaganda must be taken with a grain of salt.
Of course over coming our government’s incompetence should be a peice of cake.
Russian warship armed with hypersonic missiles to train with Chinese, South African navies
A Russian warship armed with advanced hypersonic missiles completed a drill in the Atlantic Ocean, ahead of joint naval exercises with the Chinese and South African navies scheduled for next month, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
Russiaâs Admiral Gorshkov frigate, armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles, practiced âdelivering a missile strike against an enemy surface target,â the shipâs commander Igor Krokhmal said in a video released by the ministry.
The exercise, described by state news agency Tass as an âelectronic launchâ or virtual simulation, confirmed the âdesigned characteristicsâ of the missile system, said Krokhmal, who pointed to the missilesâ purported ability to reach distances of more than 900 kilometers (559 miles).
The test was part of a long voyage of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate launched earlier this month, when Russian state media said the warship was dispatched with the hypersonic missiles. The deployment will also include joint training with the Chinese and South African navies off the coast of South Africa, according to Moscow and Pretoria.

In a separate statement detailing the joint exercises, which run February 17-27, South Africaâs Defense Department said that âcontrary to the assertionsâ from critics, South Africa âwas not abandoning its neutral position on the Russian-Ukraine conflictâ and âcontinues to urge both parties to engage in dialogue as a solution to the current conflict.â

The Portuguese are one of the smallest members of NATO, but kudos to their navy for doing the useful work of watching the Ruskies.
The Russians barely got this ship delivered. She is supposed to be a first in her class. Plans for follow up ship are on hold.
She looks nice. But who would want to take that to war? Itâs held together with duct tape and grey paint.
