Part way through Ordinary People, I realized I was hating her character. It felt like the food chain had reversed direction. Mary playing someone despicable was a shock to my system. She deserved an Oscar for it.
She said once in an interview that, while “Ordinary People” was an interesting break from her usual cheery comic roles, she personally despised the character she played.
