Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

“U.S. Leans Toward Providing Abrams Tanks to Ukraine”

“The Biden administration is leaning toward sending a significant number of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine and an announcement of the deliveries could come this week, U.S. officials said.

The announcement would be part of a broader diplomatic understanding with Germany in which Berlin would agree to send a smaller number of its own Leopard 2 tanks and would also approve the delivery of more of the German-made tanks by Poland and other nations. It would settle a trans-Atlantic disagreement over the tanks that had threatened to open fissures as the war drags into the end of its first year.”

“Germany has now received Poland’s official request to re-export Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, the Polish defence minister said on Tuesday, as Warsaw cranks up the pressure on Berlin to give its approval.

Ukraine wants the German-made Leopard 2, one of the most widely used Western tanks, to help it break through Russian lines and recapture territory this year.”

“For Ukraine, what’s so special about Germany’s Leopard 2 tanks?”

“As the war in Ukraine nears its one-year mark, Kyiv is pushing Western allies to provide modern battle tanks for its fight with Russian forces. And there’s one particular model the Ukrainians want — the German-made Leopard 2.

Other countries have offered different tanks, such as Britain, which promised 14 Challenger 2 models earlier this month. But the Leopard 2’s speed and ease of use — as well as the fact that there are a large number of them already in Europe — have made them more attractive to Kyiv.

In a statement last week, the Ukrainian foreign and defense ministers said that while they welcomed Britain’s “bold and timely decision” to send a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks, they were “not sufficient to achieve operational goals.” They went on to appeal to countries “that have Leopard 2 tanks in service” to send them to Ukraine.“

“The tank is powered by a diesel engine, which is relatively easy to refuel and gives the vehicle an extended range of about 210 miles on road. It also uses standardized NATO 120mm ammunition, which would grant Ukraine access to a larger pool of suppliers than its current tanks, which require 125mm.”

“Ukraine has focused on the Leopard 2 in part because there are so many in Europe, where they could be transported to the battlefield with relative ease. “

“In a phone call earlier this month, Scholz suggested to President Biden that in order for Germany to unlock a package of Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine, Washington should send the M1 Abrams.

However, the Biden administration has argued that the U.S.-made tanks have a number of disadvantages for the field in Ukraine.

They use jet fuel, which is far more difficult to obtain compared to the diesel used by the Leopard 2. Though the tank once weighed 60 tons, it has ballooned in weight over the years; new versions can weigh nearly 75 tons, which adds logistical difficulties. That’s a lot of weight to drive over a bridge, for example.”

“‘This is not a moment to slow down:’ U.S. says Ukraine making new gains”

“Kyiv’s forces are taking ground around a strategic city in the eastern Luhansk region, a senior U.S. military official said Monday, ahead of what is expected to be a new Ukrainian counteroffensive to retake territory this spring.

While the front lines in the fight remain largely static, as winter weather makes it difficult for tanks and armored vehicles to move quickly, the Pentagon is seeing Ukraine beginning to make progress. The strategic city, Kreminna, is seen as a gateway to Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, two key industrial centers in the Donbas region that Russia seized last summer.

“What we’re seeing is Ukrainian counteroffensive operations, again, largely fluid in that area in terms of back and forth, making some incremental gains near Kreminna,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations.”

“New footage suggests the Russian tank industry is struggling to roll out modernized tanks! Manufacturers can’t keep up with the demand of the war so Russia uses older tech to desperately modernize its tank fleet. 1/6

Russian media shows T-80BVM tanks in Luhansk oblast, Ukraine. At first sight, they appear to have some modifications: The ERA on the side skirts has been extended and the turret received a “netting” similar to that of T-90M. This appeared on recently upgraded T-72B3 tanks. 2/6

However, that’s not the most interesting thing. The tanks appear to have optics which do not match the T-80BVM’s configuration. In fact, it turns out that they have the old 1G42 gunner sight paired with 1PN-96MT-02 thermals. 3/6

The 1PN-96MT-02 sight was designed to be used to modernize the T-62 tank. Russia is likely using it because it is now unable to produce more modern Sosna-U optics for its T-72 and T-80 tanks. The same sight was seen on a T-72B tank receiving upgrades back in early January. 4/6

So, what is my conclusion of all this? It seems that Russia is desperate to modernize its tanks but it can’t afford to keep up, which could be due to sanctions. This results in “hybrids” using tech designed for other tanks, crudely upgraded and sent to the frontlines. 5/6

So we went from 21st century warfare to soviet era, to WWII, to WWI

“Good description how Russia’s tactic gradually deteriorated from trying (and failing) a Blitzkrieg attack, then going over to WW2 tactics for Lysychansk, then currently employing WW1 tactics in Bakhmut.”

“How Russia’s tactics have changed since the beginning of the war - 4 strategies of the Russian command 1/”

Phase I – Blitzkrieg
Рhase II - tank breakthrough
Phase III - probing the defense
Phase IV - assault infantry

The biggest impediment at the moment to recapturing Kreminna is the dense minefield of the territory ...

The situation along the front lines in Ukraine continues to remain largely static, with the exceptions of being Ukraine’s counter offensive operations efforts near Kreminna and Russia’s continued efforts to try to take territory near Bakhmut ...

Ukrainian forces are making some incremental gains in their efforts to recapture Kreminna, where more than 18,000 people used to live before Russia’s full-on invasion. It is just one example of the Ukrainians looking to exploit opportunities along the Russian defensive lines, and our focus is on trying to get them the security assistance they need to be able to take advantage and exploit those kinds of opportunities.”

••Day 334.

Today there are a lot of updates from the Zaporizhzhia region.

Here, after the Russians launched their offensive operation with the goal of capturing Orikhiv, they quickly realized that they underestimated the capability of the Ukrainians.

Ukrainian artillery, which they thought was relocated to the east, opened devastating fire and forced the Russians to completely change their main lines of attack and especially how these attacks are conducted.

As you remember, during the first day of the Russian offensive operation, the Russians established control over the grey zone areas to get as close to the Ukrainian defense line as possible, and during the second day, the Russians started storming every single settlement that is a part of the Orikhiv defense line, which did not work out very well.

It seems like the Russians counted on two things.

Firstly, the Russians likely assumed that by increasing the activity in this dormant direction rapidly, they could catch the Ukrainians off guard and exploit the element of surprise to the fullest.

Secondly, the Russians likely assumed that the Ukrainians had decreased the concentration of their forces here in favor of other directions, such as Kreminna and Bakhmut, to the point where the Ukrainians were incapable of repelling a massive attack.

That is why they opted for such a broad attack with a lot of troops - they didn’t think that the Ukrainians had enough troops to save the situation everywhere, and they also did not expect that the Ukrainians still have enough artillery in the region, as almost all artillery brigades were relocated to the east.

As it turned out, they underestimated the Ukrainians with respect to both factors because it turned out that the Ukrainians were not caught by surprise, they had enough men to retain control over all settlements, and they managed to cause the biggest problems for the Russians with their artillery.

Even though this is exactly what the Ukrainian General Staff reported and showed in the video where Ukrainian artillery is successfully preventing the Russians from crossing the fields, the same conclusions can be derived from Russian sources as well.

The first wave of reports was overly optimistic and suggested that the Russians had taken control over all settlements in one day.

The second wave of reports was less enthusiastic and claimed that the fights continued to take place.

The fights did not continue to take place, but the Russians were definitely preparing to resume them very shortly.

When they resumed their offensive actions, they significantly decreased the scope of their operation and focused just on the outskirts.

The last wave of reports is more realistic, and almost all Russian sources confirm that the Russians did not enter any of the villages due to overwhelming arterially fire and distant mining.

Right now, the Ukrainians are in full control of the villages from Scherbaky to Novodanylivka, and the Russians here are conducting a lot of small-scale attacks that are meant to identify Ukrainian fortifications, observation posts, and other positions, which they later target with their artillery.

In order to alleviate the main problems of their infantry, the Russians also engaged in intense counterbattery combat.

When it comes to the western part of the region, here the Russians continue storming Kamianske, and there are a lot of conflicting reports.

Some reports suggest that the Russians took control over it, some say that they didn’t, but the Ukrainians still left it due to intense fire, and some say that there were no changes to the status quo.

The only thing that is clear is that the fights there are incredibly heavy.

When it comes to the eastern part of the region, here no party reported any actions, and it looks like Ukrainian fortification turned out to be too formidable for the Russians to storm them at this stage of the offensive operation.

Overall, the fights are once again becoming positional.

This is very good news for the Ukrainians because it means that their defense line is intact, and the Ukrainians retained tactically advantageous positions that make it much easier to protect the flanks of Orikhiv.

There’s been a lot in the press about the tactics in Bakhmut. I wonder if it’s because Russia is getting hesitant to use up it’s entire supply of tanks. They had 3,500 in service, used 1,500 for the invasion. 1,642 destroyed, means they have only 1,856 for national defense... barely half what they had. They were believed to have massive numbers of decommissioned tanks (if I’m not overextending that word). Like 15-20,000. But many or most were believed to be utter crap.
