This day in 1942: https://www.untothebreach.net/2022/01/08/world-war-ii-chronicle-january-8-1942/
I dated a woman whose grandfather was the Captain of the New Orleans at Pearl Harbor and later at Guadalcanal. He wrote an unpublished memoir of the events that I was privileged to read. The perspective from the bridge still gives me chills when I think about it.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;More at Literary Devices Once More unto the Breach.
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humilityBut when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.
Why does "In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility" remind me of nothing so much as FJB?
Article written many years ago claimed Joe Boss was the toughest Marine fighter pilot in WW II
Joe Foss in retirement frequently appeared at veterans events. He flew a lot and traveled light. after 9-11 he was, as a result of having little or no baggage, tagged as a ‘potential terrorist’ and subjected to an insulting and deliberately humiliating ‘security check’ by ignorant TSA employees. The clowns were particularly suspicious of the MOH he carried in a presentation container. None of them knew what it was, refused to believe Foss’s explanation and one female minority TSA type removed the MOH from the container , held it up, and accused Foss of having no right to carry it. This is the nation we have that hates much of our country.
