When I was in the Army, if you addressed a non-com as “Sir”, the usual reply would be: “don’t call me sir, I work for a living!”

When I was in basic at Fort Leonard Wood in 82, we referred to the drill sergeants by their rank. Yes sergeant first class, yes staff sergeant etc...
