Beto may not be as dumb as we think he is. Maybe he has no desire to win these races. Instead, he's been amassing a fortune for himself as a professional political loser.
If you are going to take beatings for the team, why not go out with 10s of millions in cash and a ticket to much more from liberal networks.

Republicans have similar types, Mike Huckabee is a prime example, he had no chance to win the Republican Nomination, but he got a chance to keep a few million in cash, got hired by Fox News and is now selling Trump children’s books and bootleg sleeping supplement, it carried over to his family allowing his daughter to get a Whitehouse Job and now Governor of Arkansas.
