I completely agree with your post, that Trump finally being gracious and magnanimous would likely lead to his biggest following ever. At this point, he may need to consider that just to stop the bleeding.
However, Newsmax just had a short interview with Eric Bolling, who was reportedly taking a quick break in the middle of an interview with Trump, to be released in the next couple of days, where that didn’t sound like how it would play out, were the contest to ever actually happen.
Bolling said he had just finished asking Trump about DeSantis, and paraphrasing here, Trump said he likes DeSantis just fine, and he has been a good Governor, but if DeSantis decides to enter the Presidential election against Trump, Trump will be just as aggressive against DeSantis as he has been against others in the past, because he believes that’s what you are supposed to do in a primary.
Basically no gloves, no quarter. Straight from the man himself. We’ll see if it works as well as it did against the relative clowns he faced in 2016, none of which had the support DeSantis currently has.
President Trump needs to take deep breaths and reflect.
If he has a second d shot in mind he should analyze how & why he has continually shot himself in the foot si many times. Lose the nasty New Yorker model. Been there,done that. It appears DeSantis had about a week to befor deciding to make his pro-O'Dea comment. I would, even as a DeSantis admirer, not consider it a week well spent.

Trump is very practiced in knowing how to deflect, distract , and deny the multitude of charges that have come his way since it became clear he was not only running, but going to win the nomination , not only going to win the nomination, but win the Presidency,which he did fair and square. that’s not the issue-—the issue is that his words took on the characteristics of all HIS detractors-—he has been making those kind of mistakes so consistently for years, he has not gained any new support, and must try to make do with his hard-core that will obviously NEvER entirely go away. But he isn’t as they say “doing himself any favors” with that kind of DeSantis talk. It’s exactly what the opposition Democrats want to hear.
