At one time Algeria was a Department of the French Republic... theoretically equal to the departments in Europe...I don’t know what their immigration polices are after separation.

Immigration was limited after the war to Harkis or French allied fighters and their families to escape reprisals. There was an extreme backlash to Algerian migrants in France in the 1970s, and it didn’t really pick up again until the 1980s and 1990s. Just like America, the government has never asked the French public.
