I think I see the problem, and it is with this term "commonsense" written as one word. In the eyes of the gun control fanatics, "commonsense" is a synonym for "nonsense", and is entirely different in meaning from the term written as two words, "common sense", a truly rare commodity.

Common sense is a tribute to people who have had common experiences in life, and certain conclusions may be drawn from these learning opportunities, thus the term, common sense. But there are so many different sets of experience by diverse factions, that there really is little that is common to all of them, therefore the rarity. What make sense for one group, may prove to be truly confusing for another group, and no common ground can be found.

Use “common sense” in terms of restrictions on abortion and watch their heads explode.
