The mainstream media is trying to use the current situation in Florida as a reason to stop using fossil fuels. I'm repoosting this to put that into perspective.

Ian hit Florida as a Cat 4. I believe Katrina hit New Orleans as a Cat 5.
Since when is 4 worse than 5?

...also there were more Black people affected by Katrina than by Ian.
So Katrina was more racist, and thus more terrible, than Ian.
So in at least two ways, things are getting better with regard to natural disasters.

Anyone with a brain understands it has little to do with burning fossil fuels or not. Fossil fuels (if, indeed, that is what they are) have helped fuel more prosperity in the world, however, which has led to improved building techniques which, in turn, increases survival rates from natural disasters.
So there is a reasonable argument that fossil fuels have, in fact, reduced the number of people killed by natural disasters.

Burning fuels allows civilization to relocate farther away from areas that had higher risks due to weather.
Many coastal sites are now sparsely populated industrial areas, tourist areas, or seasonal retreats for the wealthy.

The values in this chart seems to correspond with the introduction of weather satellites for tracking storms. These allowed effective preparations and evacuations not possible before. So it is not necessarily the counter argument implied.
