Electric cars charging at night could make America’s power grids unstable, study warns

STANFORD, Calif. — Leaving your electric car charging overnight to have it ready in the morning seems like a good idea in theory. But in reality, research suggests doing so does more harm in the long run. Stanford scientists say that it’s more costly to charge your electric car at night and it could stress out your local electric grid.

Instead, researchers suggest drivers should switch to charging their vehicle at work or in public charging stations. Another added benefit to charging in the daytime at a public station is that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

With the effects of climate change more apparent than ever—frequent forest fires, widespread flooding, and stronger hurricanes—car companies are expecting people to start investing in electric-powered cars in the future. For example, California residents are expected to buy more electric cars as the state is planning to ban sales of gasoline-powered cars and light trucks in 2035.

“We encourage policymakers to consider utility rates that encourage day charging and incentivize investment in charging infrastructure to shift drivers from home to work for charging,” says study’s co-senior author, Ram Rajagopal, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University, in a statement..

So far, electric cars make up one million or 6% of automobile sales in California. The state’s goal is to increase that number to five million electric vehicles by 2030. However, the study authors say that the change from gas to electric will cause a strain in the electric grid when there’s 30% to 40% of cars on the road.

“We were able to show that with less home charging and more daytime charging, the Western U.S. would need less generating capacity and storage, and it would not waste as much solar and wind power,” explains Siobhan Powell

Everything the left does causes instability.

Amusingly, the site has a link to an article titled "Sexually active gay men more than twice as likely to develop Inflammatory Bowel Disease, study shows". I wonder why that is. /s

Okay, so first they say no charging during the day, now they say at night, so how about generic ‘please do not charge your electric cars’? And maybe ban them overall.

I have not done the math, but curious with the load charging one car causes, how many cars can the grid sustain if it was solely devoted to charging cars? My bet is there isn't sufficient capacity even now and definitely if they start putting more electric cars on the road.

Also, since most people do not have garages, often have to park on the street curb, how are they to charge their cars anyway? Here in Reno on Lakeside I've seen an extension cord running out from an apartment, across the grass and sidewalk to a car. I doubt anyone will want to see this occurring everywhere--for safety if for no other reason.

Look for new electrical construction regulations prohibiting installation of level 2 home charging stations at a residence. betcha.

would not waste as much solar and wind power

One, rarely mentioned problem with solar is, that it cannot be turned off easily. When the Sun shines, the solar generates power, like it or not!
They are actually building fancy resistor boxes with sophisticated cooling, to burn off the excesses!

They can simply program the car to only accept charging during certain hours.

Doesn’t matter - the greenie morons consider anything logical that casts doubts on the tenets of their religion as blasphemy. For example, electric cars actually pollute more than ice cars - blasphemy. We don’t have the grid or generating capacity to power the nation’s transportation needs by electricity - blasphemy. Wind and solar are unreliable and not all that clean - blasphemy. etc. You can’t reason with them because to paraphrase Stuart Chase, “For the true believer no proof is necessary and no disproof possible.” You can’t reason with them you cannot bargain with them. You can only destroy them and that’s hard to do with the Democrat election cheating mechanisms in place.

Don’t worry, copper thieves will save the power grid.

I guess it comes down to how much of the electric grid's supply comes from solar vs. non-car charging usage. The recommendations to charge at night assume non-solar power generation where it is better to run the generators at a constant rate. With more usage during the day there is excess supply at night. If much of the grid is solar powered, then you have your surplus at noon.

The huge irony here is that utilities were sponsoring EV research starting in the 1980s as a way to utilize unused capacity in the nighttime hours.

Now we have wind and solar that only work in the daytime so we have an excess of daytime capacity. Ergo, the original justification for EVs went POOF!

There are only two remaining justifications for EVs:
1. “Decarbonize” the world (a HUGE fallacy based on a hoax)
2. Shift pollution out of cities and congested areas to rural areas.

The irony of #2 is that the government is spending HUGE amounts of money on their idiotic “environmental justice” campaign ostensibly to pay people for the injustices they have had from living near power plants and refineries. Will the government pay “environmental justice” payments to rural people who now have to suffer windmills and solar farms?

didnt i just read an article that said public chargers are way more expensive than home chargers?

plus how many chargers could there be at work or nearby?

i wouldnt worry about this too much

there will never be as many evs as there are currently gas cars

evs will be way too expensive for the masses

because “green energy” will be so expensive you will be more concerned with heating/cooling your home than charging your ev

the masses will be forced, due to cost, onto public transportation

which is the whole point of banning gas cars

only the rich and powerful will be able to afford personal transportation

so you see we are all being forced to go thru this painful transition so the elite

will no longer have parking problems

they promise the jetsons
you get the flintstones

The idiot-banana who wrote this obviously has no critical thinking ability. There are so many logical contradictions and plain old errors from ignorance, that it’s silly — an I won’t waste your time or mine with a point-by-point refutation.

The educational system has produced an intellectual cripple in this one.

“There are only two remaining justifications for EVs:”

They free up oil for gas production.

i remember the good ol’ 70s when you could only gas your car at certain times

good times

good times

that was because opec cut production

now the globull warmists are doing it to us intentionally

Solely? Not realistic but the answer is hundreds of millions.
