The surprising ways the Respect for Marriage Act would — and wouldn’t — protect same-sex marriage
GRID ^ | September 16, 2022 | Maggie Severns

The Respect for Marriage Act is a more permissive law than the precedent set by Obergefell. It wouldn’t require states to license same-sex marriages, which Obergefell does. It would mandate they recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. The Respect for Marriage Act also doesn’t explicitly regulate businesses, which could help quell concern from Republicans concerned about religious liberties, experts told Grid.

The poison is contained in the hidden details. Of course regulation of business isn't "explicitly" addressed by this bill, but as is predictable by democrats, they will DEEM it so.

If a business, or church, barely dips its toe into a government program, they will be forced to bow to the homosexual idol, or close down.

Odd that the First Amendment only applies to government and can't prevent private businesses from regulating speech. However, these gay-friendly laws apply to both government and private business.

Seems to be a big inconsistency.

Everything in the leftist world view is inconsistent.

“Our way or the highway” is their rule.

“It would mandate they recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.”

Doesn’t the Constitution already require states to recognize the official actions of other states? Couples who couldn’t get married or divorced in New York would travel to Delaware or Nevada respectively. “She went to Reno”, was a line in 1940s movies the audiences understood to mean she was getting a divorce.

If the Federal government respected marriage it would stay the heck out of marriage! That’s between me, my wife and God! Abolish FICA and limited the federal government and voila....problem solved.

So, you're prepared to file as a single on your tax return? Assuming your wife doesn't work, that's going to result in a massive increase in your marginal rate.

Did you read my reply? get rid of FICA...meaning, go with a flat tax or get rid of FICA and end all the “exemptions”.

No bill does less or equal to how it is advertised. None.

Getting rid of income tax is a completely separate issue.

I know, I just think it’s funny how the left thinks.

And it’s hilarious that they name their site for the name first given to AIDS.

What most fail to understand is that it would force all states to recognize what one state allows.

If Nevada reinstates polygamy, every state would have to recognize polygamy.

If California legalizes human-animal marriage, then every state will have to legalize it.

If Minnesota allows for 13 year olds to marry, then every state will be forced to allow it.

I am sure the Founders never envisioned the craziness we are now encountering. Nevertheless, back in the day there were only two grounds for divorce in NY—insanity and/or criminal assault. So one or both went to Nevada, filed for divorce there after living in the state six weeks. When Nevada granted the divorce, the couple were divorced in NY.

One reason that Utah’s admission was delayed for decades was the issue of polygamy. One requirement for Utah statehood was that polygamy be outlawed.

As for marriage, at least one state allows 14-year-old girls to marry if pregnant or already mothers.

But as things stand now, if Utah legalizes polygamy, every state would have to recognize the marriage status of the polygamous group.

I think that the only way round it would be a Constitutional Amendment.
