The Russian people are not going to freeze this winter. Can NATO say the same thing?

I don’t think anyone wins a nuclear war. I think Russia would survive better than most, even if they “lose”.

Their nuclear forces can easily fight NATO to a draw.

The question is whether any countries beyond NATO and Russia would be involved. If not, they would be the winners of a limited nuclear war.

Therefore, the only reasonable course of action would be to attack the major cities of all countries with the full complement of available nuclear weapons, followed by the release of biological agents to “mop up” the in-between places.

The combination of nuclear winter and global pandemics would ensure there are no winners.

Thanks, Stavros, but Captain Obvious reached the same conclusion months ago, when the Ruskie "clown car" army couldn't even take Kiev. The constant "Putin is Hitler!" claptrap never matched reality - but it sure worked to get the rubes to back Biden sending tens of billions to Ukraine...

Have you ever been to Europe? Outside of the Nordics it hardly ever goes below freezing. The greatest inconvenience to your average German is that they will have to wear a sweater.

I'm betting China doesn't mind their northern neighbor being weakened one bit.

Russia IS fighting NATO.

Who do they think they’re kidding? This is literally NATO’s war in the Ukraine.

“The greatest inconvenience to your average German is that they will have to wear a sweater.”

In Dec-Feb, Berlin average temperature is 34F, Paris is 40F.

“Does this mean that the EU may face Chinese troops?”

I don’t think it’s likely that Chinese troops care to march that many thousands of miles. And they would have a couple of formidable mountain ranges to overcome if they decided to try.

“After all, China is out for world conquest.”

No, I think China is out for what they are always out for, which is to be the hegemonic regional power in Asia. They’ve never pursued “world conquest”, unless you count the Yuan dynasty, but those were Mongols, not Chinese. If they did want to pursue world conquest, it would take more than their little “belt & road” stuff, it would take an actual blue water navy, aircraft carriers, and secure ports and bases in strategic locations around the world. Perhaps they do have those aspirations, but if so, they are still a very long way from practically being able to realize them.

“And I donโ€™t think that Russia is finished with the Ukes, yet.”

Maybe not, but it doesn’t look like they have a lot of options to make progress. If they do want to conquer Ukraine, then their best bet might be to sign a ceasefire and regroup so they can try to mount a proper invasion later. But Ukraine would just use that as an opportunity to join NATO to prevent a future invasion. Hence Putin’s determination to keep fighting even if he’s stuck in a quagmire.

"Russia Might Not Be Able to Fight NATO Thanks to the the fall of the Soviet Union."

Maybe 19fortyfive is a few years behind on current events?

You are aware that water freezes at 32, so both of those are above freezing.

You are aware that a sweater at 32 or 40 degrees is extremely uncomfortable.

That failure rates would give America a crushing advantages in a nuclear exchange.

I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks.

When I was in the 10th mountain div, we spent a winter on the picturesque slopes of Mt. McKinley at approximately 10,000 feet. We stayed from November through March. I don’t think we had any days above -50F. We learned, quickly, how to build a functional igloo, and other various techniques to stay warm, however, frostbite was a constant problem within the division. I understand their gear is now far better than that which we had.

If Russia has gained anything from this war, it’s the realization that their military is in serious need of an overhaul. We’ll see what they do with that revelation.
