So far they can’t, thankfully, and probably mostly due to Western support for Ukraine.

They’ve certainly shown themselves desiring to reclaim their former Soviet territories. It’s been one of Putins’ more consistent policy goals, demonstrated in practice over and over for the last 2 decades or so.

I’ll agree with you that he almost certainly can’t succeed, but that doesn’t mean he can’t cause a gigantic amount of suffering in his attempts.
