I always thought it was a dumb theory. This big mass explodes. What happened before that? Who made the mass? What existed around the giant mass? Around that? Did the universe we know displace something else?
One explanation I’ve heard is that the universe is an unending cycle of Big Bangs- where the universe expands, then contracts into one solid mass, then explodes again, ad infinitum.
Le Maitre, who thought up the Big Bang Theory, was a Catholic monk. He had no problem conceiving of God kicking off the whole thing. I’m sure he wouldn’t lose sleep today over needing to rethink his theory, because when God is in charge, the intellectual journey is not scary, even if humbling. It’s awe-inspiring.
