The Pacific is based upon two excellent memoirs written by Marines featured in the series, Eugene Sledge's "With The Old Breed" and Robert Leckie's "Helmet for my Pillow".

Those memoirs are even grittier than the films manage to be. You wonder how anyone survived the Pacific War with their minds intact.
