Hickock used a caliber smaller than .40.

I guess he had not read all the experts writings in the latest gun magazines.

Yes. .36 caliber which is .375 and actually slightly larger that a modern .38 Special which is .357. When Hickok was killed in 1876, the only firearm they found on him was a .32 Smith & Wesson tip up "Old Army" as they were called.
