NewsGuard is a browser extension that rates news sites based on how accurate or inaccurate their reporting is. But of course they define the standards. So you can think of them as self-appointed internet censors.

For example, they believe in man-made climate change. So if a website publishes an article that questions climate change, that site will get a low rating because of “misinformation”. And if should you visit that site, a warning message would pop up.

The really scary thing is that many libraries and schools are now using NewsGuard.

Amazing!

I didn’t realize it but the name says it all. “guard” is a synonym for defense, or sentry, or protection. So they are going to protect the people from information. Whatever information they don’t like.

If only Orwell could see how de-centralized propaganda and censorship really got implemented. He’d have to admire how very clever it really is.
