This is what probably got her killed. Rule #1 of camping - ignored.

Highly unlikely.

There was much more food in her bike packs, ten feet from the tent.

The bear went after Leah Lokan, not the nearby food.

It was a predatory attack.

I was referring to the study on bear attacks.

"...Ms. Lokan got up and moved two bags of food (packaged snack foods and a large bag of lentils) from her tent into a building..."

"...probably got her killed...

BINGO - never put bear attractant in your tent. We used to take our Boy Scout Troop camping in bear country frequently and we did not allow even water in the tents. And we checked. In the Boundary Waters we would go to a different island to clean and cook the fish.

That’s an incredibly silly question.

If the woman had a gun to begin with, this woudn’t have happened.

But this practice of running around trying to find the attacking predator -after the incident- is just ridiculous. Like those fools who decided to hunt down a bull shark in 1916.

So they found the bear. Did they ask for ID?

If this was a nuisance animal that I can understand. But people who want to become one with nature need to understand there are risks in doing so. Where was the bear bag?

Something tells me we are not getting the whole story either.

Ms. Lokan got up and moved two bags of food (packaged snack foods and a large bag of lentils) from her tent into a building known as the old jail at the museum...

NEVER have food in your tent in bear country.

Shooting a predatory bear is the only sure solution. Simply relocating a predatory bear habituated to humans shifts the elevated risk from one location to another. Eliminate the predator.

My opinion….

Was the spray released inside the enclosed tent with the bear outside?

There was much more food in her bike packs, ten feet from the tent. The bear went after Leah Lokan, not the nearby food. It was a predatory attack.

The food had been inside her tent when the bear first approached. Probably had cookie crumbs all over the tent floor still creating smell. The bear remembered the tent. Furthermore, the tent may have been downwind from the bag.

So they found the bear. Did they ask for ID?

They verified it was the correct bear with DNA analysis.

Why so much concern for the bear?

There are plenty of bears.

The population of bears has to be kept in check.

The bears will not do it on their own.

Probably had cookie crumbs all over the tent floor still creating smell.

None were mentioned in the extensive report.

People eat food.

Food smells are always going to be associated with people.

People are made of meat.

Bears which are unafraid of humans should be killed.

The fact she went back into the tent after a grizzy came around says she wasn’t that smart. She was offered to go to a hotel, a place of safety, and she declined.

I’ve pepper sprayed smaller bears and they do not respond to it in such a manner to believe my life depending on bear spray is a good choice.

I do carry a 44 Magnum with handloaded bear rounds; 270gr Speer DeepCurl, a bullet made for big game.

Best to steer clear of bears and not go back into a tent after a bear comes by like that.

“Dogs kill far more humans than bears do.”

Sure, but far less in ratio to bears and you have a much better chance surviving a dog attack.

Statistics is for liars trying to make the wrong point.

The only good bear spray is one that shoots .357 or bigger droplets....

Rangers here in Georgia have always said indigenous bears aren’t known to kill people.....but that’s just plain not true.

My wife has a Lady Smith.....a Model 60, five shot 357 magnum and she carries it with her when she goes walking in the parks. 5 shots in the face is better than bear spray anytime.

Grizzlies were marked endangered at one point. Is that still the case?

I don’t care about the bear. My concern is always the reaction to a situation that probably shouldn’t have gotten as far as it did. I’m talking about before the bear spray.

I hike. And I’m aware of the risks. But I also carry. You can’t hike certain parts of the AT without a bear bag or canister. This woman seems to be screwing around with food after the first encounter. These things can smell food, crumbs, everything, from a significant distance - miles.

Sorry, I don’t buy some of the details as written.

Once a bear figures out how delicious humans are then they all look like prey.

The Coles asked Ms. Lokan if she wanted to stay in the hotel but Ms. Lokan stated “no,” she wanted to stay in the tent.

This is the Natural Selection Question of The Year.

There would have never been an issue if she avoided the bear in his natural habitat.
