I haven’t read the original “hunger” article, but hunger, lack of shelter, and scarcity of things in general does sharpen the mind and make you work harder and more productive. In general, the USA has too much leisure and ease post WW II which led to the rise of all the commie, BLM, antifa, abortionist, gender, and generally confused misfits that have taken over the country.

I think this is the key phrase from the article: “My main point was and still is that some people benefit from the existence of hunger in the world. That helps to explain why hunger is so persistent in many places.”
