Honestly, I think that is the internal debate in the tightest circles of the Donk party, which no one dares breathe a word of in public. If they indict Trump they risk some truly unknowable consequences, yet they also know that if they don’t prevent him from running in 2024 he will likely win the nomination, and that leads to a nightmare scenario they don’t want to face (especially in the absence of a crisis like covid).

The encouraging aspect is, Joe Biden is not the only one who has an unerring abilty to eff things up. Just look at their “accomplishements” to date, given they control the legislative and executive branches of the federal govt. If we were them, we’d be pissed just like AOC is...

Another problem for them is that indicting Trump doesn’t actually stop him from running in 2024. Even if they convicted him and he was imprisoned, he could still run for office. Only a conviction in an impeachment trial can stop it, which they already failed to accomplish twice, and the second time the Chief Justice flat out told them he would not preside over a farce of impeaching a President who is no longer in office.
