True story. An acquaintance of mine from a former life served many years in the FBI. After that KKK bombing in an Alabama church killed those four little black girls, J. Edgar Hoover had had enough. He had his agents infiltrate the KKK.

The program was so effective that by the 1980s it became clear that FBI infiltrator dues was the only thing keeping the KKK financially afloat. It was proposed to drop the program. Since Reagan was president, SPLC and other leftist groups threw a hissy fit and the program continued. Sometime during the Clinton years, the program was quietly dropped with the predictable result that the KKK had no financial support to continue.
