Watched Top Gun Maverick: Made Me Laugh Throughout

Posted on 06/10/2022 7:15:53 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Guess I'm different. From the very beginning. As the planes took off to my favorite Foghat music the ground(deck) crew, through their signals and mannerisms were acting like they were choreographed dancers, not crewmen.

Manly, machismo. I dig it man! Then there's the big man-hugs. Makes you think that in adversity all our societal problems are solved regarding feminism and race. All that Gung-ho stuff just had to make me laugh. Been there-done that.

*Thank you* so much for posting that Jocko Willink interview with Dave Berke, senior Top Gun instructor. Absolutely fascinating interview!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the movie, as far-fetched as it was

Those were part of my comments in #80 on this thread. After listening to Dave Berke (courtesy of the video you posted), a lot of the stuff that happened in Top Gun Maverick may not have been so "far-fetched" after all...

You are welcome. Notice the first Dave says is “It’s a movie” so he doesn’t get weirded out if some things are not technically accurate.

I believe Iran used the F14’s in an AWACs type of role

“Movies aren’t real.”

What?
Since when?

It is a movie, not a documentary. ANYONE near the military pokes fun at the machismo of these types of movies. They are meant to be as much fantasy as any other movie. It is why we loved Predator and Delta Force and all those cheesy 80’s movies.

I don’t want to see a movie that represents my knowledge of the military. I’d probably get night sweats and be also very bored watching the movie.

Mulholland Falls(?)

Mulholland Drive (2001) is David Lynch, Naomi Watts, ...

I watched it last night with Mrs. POF. It was utterly absurd throughout, but the VERY RICH love interest bar owner with the classic Porsche ($150,000), San Diego beach house ($7 million) and the big sail boat ($500,000) made it all utterly believable. Yeah, a rich bar owner. Sure.

My wife figured she had to have divorced a Silicon Valley billionaire to get all that money.

utterly believable

I struggle to find much in Bond movies believable, but they sure are entertaining :)

Yeah, ridiculous and distracting, along with the Star Wars IV pre-attack meeting. Nameless, invisible enemy also irked me -- even when they ridiculously stole the plane you didn't see anyone else around -- but then again the enemy wasn't really specified in the original either.

What about world’s fasted R&D plane supported by a diverse group of FIVE people, all of whom are in the control room, and not a single support person around the actual aircraft? Sheesh. Then the brash test pilot goes for it and pushes past Mach 10, ignoring orders to not do that. Suddenly, high skin temperatures arise at Mach 10? Getting to those hypersonic speeds means leading edge materials are at 3,600 F. Temps don’t just suddenly jump up and get out of control. And an aircraft breaking apart at 7,000 mph (and probably 100,000 feet altitude) is a survivable accident without a single broken bone?

I was SO turned off by that ridiculous beginning that I knew the rest of the movie would be a real stinker...and I wasn’t disappointed.

I worked at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in the late 90’s. Every time one of the Prowlers took-off they did a barrel roll and then went about their business for the day.

I was traveling to Phoenix in 1980. Shortly after crossing into Arizona from Nevada the traffic got stopped along the highway for road construction. Most people got out of their cars during the wait. It wasn’t long before we heard this incredible noise. It was 2 F-15’s that decided to get in a little strafing practice using the line of traffic as their “target”, with one on each side of the highway.

I just remember that the sound wasn’t heard until they got past you. Always thought about the jihadis and that during the past 20-year War on Terror. By the time you hear them, your already dead.

You know it’s a movie and not a documentary, right? Are you out of your Thorazine script?

Connelly is still quite hot - you’ll notice this movie (Maverick) they do try to hide her hands

Indeed. When I was serving Uncle Sam in the 7th Fleet, F-14’s would practice bombing runs on our little Guided Missile Destroyer. You’d never see them but you’d hear them a few seconds after they made their pass. Then you’d hear our gun and missile systems start up and start tracking them with the Fire Control systems- quite thrilling. I highly recommend the experience for millennials (LOL)

And him showing up in a diner just for the dumb laugh line from the kid. Yep. My group of Gen X'ers rolled our eyes and it just got worse from there. I asked folks leaving what they thought and every one of them were like "Meh". There was one Boomer guy who kept applauding at calculated appluse moments throughout the film. No one else seemed thrilled by it, despite some super-impressive flight choreography.

What? I didn’t know that!! Now you tell me. Couldn’t you have warned me before I went to see it?

There are movies that are fantasy and at the edge of believability. There are movies that are very believable (Apollo 13, The Right Stuff). Then there are those that are way off in insane fantasy land like Top Gun 2. This one is preposterous at many levels, so preposterously preposterous that the preposterousness gets in the way of simple enjoyment.
