Here is an example of what can happen when a perp goes from killer to hostage taker back to killer after a pause when there is no firing for a length of time.
The hostages were in the front of the store with their hands tied together, crawling around, screaming, when one of the gunmen “walked systematically down the line shooting hostages,” Craig said. Authorities said they had no choice but to start shooting.
And this is what they were trying to stay away from. I watched this on TV while I was stationed in Sacramento (Mather AFB), at the time of the shooting, and when the perps felt threatened one just started down the line of people shooting victims lined up seated on the floor as he went. But if they had charged them, a lot more could have died. They coudn’t get them when they put a vest outside the door and when one came out to get it, they tried to shoot him.
I found some of the film of the live event I saw in 1991. What you’ll see is when they felt threatened and were rushed with gunfire, one entered the screen from the right and was rushing down the line of seated hostages shooting them as he went.

Sorry it is about the film that came out from the actual footage they showed, but it’s all I could find.
When something like this happens, there is no way to do it right as only if you can get the perp with a sniper bullet before he can open fire again, people are going to die. And rushing the classroom would have triggered it just like the event in Sacramento I saw. Sad to say because it was bad, it could have been worse.

I’m not a big fan of this FReeper, but my differences with him are philosophical. I’ve had no argument with him in the past wrt his accuracy, so I’m going to think (for now) that this is all true

If you doubt my “accuracy,” then look it up. It’s out there and I got the opportunity to attend some of them. A good place to maybe start your research might be here with these as no site that I can find actually lists everything. You have to dig a little to get it all that you can have. And we still have some that are not declassified so the public doesn’t know about them...yet.
