History books written in the first few years after WWII stated that the conservatives in Germany were the last hold outs against the Nazis.

Then the leftist authors of history books had the brilliant idea to call the Nazis "the far right".

That way, leftists (actually having views the closest to the Nazis) could forever tar "the right" in the USA or anywhere (who have views completely opposite of actual Nazis) with "being Nazis".
