Would you consider the UK, Ireland or Italia third world? In those countries rural motorways are nearly always single lane of travel. The better ones have pull outs every Km or so a lot do not. Roads in towns also tend to be one lane of that town was laid out by the Romans almost assuredly one lane in the towns center district. Common courtesy and sense are all that is needed to drive in theses areas a bridge to far for Yanks apparently. The real fun comes when two lorries meet head to head in the hinterlands it happens a lot.
I’m glad you’re amused. Sounds like a lot of trouble just to get from point A to B. The roundabouts reminds me of “Family Vacation” with Chevy Chase stuck on the roundabout for a long time. I wouldn’t want to drive in Britain because they drive on the wrong side of the road. ðŸ¤
Most residential roads are designed to accommodate 2-way traffic even with on-street parking. New subdivisions have narrower roads then ones built 20 years ago. Some I’ve seen lately are as narrow as 20 feet. Gone are the days of 12-foot-wide driving lanes
As an engineering who has designed and constructed these roads, residential roads are to be treated as yield control, meaning if there is a car coming at you, someone needs to decide who is going to pull over to the side to let the other car go around.
You can thank the planners and the States for this because of all the regulations required just to plat and lay out a subdivision of new homes to meet the environmental requirements. Their master plans are meant to force the public on to mass transit where people live in “walkable” communities
