It’s not uncommon for family members to request and have granted destruction of weapons used, for example, in suicides. I’m sure there are common situations where weapons used in homicides are destroyed as well.

Kabuki theater with bad acting. The Wisconsin judicial system was not going to give the weapon back. As An AR 15 dies 2 are built to replace it. I just wish making the components for 223 / 5.56 ammunition was as easy as building an AR.
I'm betting he sat down with his mom...and she gave him some good advice...and this was part of it.
I think he's doing the right thing. And I think he's well loved by his mom. She wants him to move on and this is a start.
