pop rivets are not structural and im sure were never used in that capacity.
His crew installed them.

“My brother was a part of a B-52 ground crew in the 1970s. He told me that there are a lot of “stop drills” and pop-riveted patch plates everywhere in the superstructure. There are also many dead electrical cables woven in there that have replacements pulled in beside them to do the job. They were becoming concerned about the cumulative weight of the patches and cables.”
It is amazing that some many B-52’s are still flying.
