Starting in the days of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, American colleges and universities embraced the idea that one way for the country to atone for its ugly history of slavery and racial discrimination was to give preferences to applicants from “underrepresented “ groups. At first, that just meant students with African ancestry, but later came to include Hispanics, Native Americans, Aleutian Islanders and others.
Schools began to admit applicants from those groups even though they had weaker academic qualifications than the great majority of the students. The assumption was that they were helping them, because a degree from a more prestigious college would provide them with a big boost in life. The logic seemed clear: Since on average graduates of more prestigious schools like Harvard and Berkeley had higher earnings than graduates of less prestigious ones, increasing the numbers of minority students at them would begin to narrow the earnings gap between whites and others. Members of those groups would quickly be brought into the economic “mainstream” and begin to acquire positions of power and influence.
The theory sounded good. Almost nobody questioned it. And even today, belief in affirmative action (I’m going to drop that euphemism in favor of the more accurate term racial preferences for the remainder of this article) remains powerful within the education establishment.
In fact, to question or criticize it can get you in serious trouble, as University of Pittsburgh medical professor Norman Wang discovered when he criticized the use of racial preferences, arguing that putting race ahead of excellence would degrade the medical profession. Law professor Jonathan Turley wrote of the case, “The only thing more unsettling than the actions of the university was the relative silence of his colleagues throughout the University of Pittsburgh as he was punished for expressing his academic views.”

The original and still the worst ‘Reparations’ legislation.
You have to look no further than our idiot Transportation Secretary to see the damages of Affirmative Action hires. The only reason he got that job was because he was gay.
It must be good. Just look at the results on tv shows. There are no white people left in America in 2022.
He WAS gay? Did he give that up?
A kid, no matter what skin color may be able to maintain a B average at a mid-level engineering college. Where-as that exact same kid might wind up flunking out of Cal Tech or MIT. Better to go to a mid level engineering school.
LOL nope- sorry- meant to type “is” not “was”.
The only institutional racism in the United States is called “Affirmative Action” and it critically harms members of all races.
The use of the word “underrepresented” exposes the racist roots of this approach.
The underrepresented? You mean hetero white folks?
The left are all “black, history month” and now “women’s history month” and gay month, etc but they are also,al. About ERASING white history
Funny how they cancel and erase history. Then turn around d and claim that our country is ‘hiding history’..
Betting to the point now that even commercials dont hardly have any hetero white folks anymore
So the underrepresented must mean hetero white folks I’m guessing?
Booty-Gig may be a gay commie, but he was the top student at a pretty decent high school, Harvard undergrad and Oxford grad on a Rhodes scholarship, mayor of a decent sized town, and a Navy vet. So he’s probably got a better resume than 90% of previous peeps in that job.
All that tells me is that he can likely spell - Transportation!
It doesn’t say he has any experience in or knowledge of the transportation industry.
So yes he got the job for being gay!
Just like Elaine Chao got the job in the Trump administration because she was married to Mitch McConnell, right?
AA now includes the entire world except for White people.
Immigrants from non-White countries who have no history of any discrimination against them or their ancestors by the White Americans now get preferences.
Tell me how that is in any way “fair”.
IMO, overall, Affirmative Action has been a wasted opportunity. It’s just not enough for the racists who could have taken better advantage of the situation, which I sincerely hope will only be temporary. If the powers that be want to call it a success, I’d like to have them explain to the American people how they measure success.
The author is a liar or an idiot.....or both!
A hindrance for everyone involved.
