My own belief is that Putin can't negotiate seriously with Ukraine because it's too humiliating for him to make the concessions needed.
The US should consult with Zelenskyy and start making proposals for a general settlement involving treaties with the US and NATO. Putin can save face with recognition of the annexation of Crimea, Ukraine gets its well-armed independence guaranteed and Russia gets brought back into the INF, Conventional Forces and OSCE frameworks. Everybody gets something and peace is restored.
I would point out Russia didn’t offer to end the war, merely start a cease fire, and the condition that Ukraine lay down its arms is ridiculous.

This what I don’t quite understand.
If the west is sitting around nervously thinking about getting nuked by the Russians—why is Kyiv still not even shelled? The place is lit up like a Christmas tree every night and Russia doesn’t hit it. Seems to me it would be very easy to do if wanted. Putin is playing at least 3D chess with the world.
Serbia right now is more democratic than Ukraine, but neither of them are democratic enough to be part of the EU just yet
Putin had a closed event in which the only attendees were Aeroflot female flight attendants.
Proof he is afraid of his own military leaders, politicians, and oligarchs.
There is no other rational explanation.
I don’t think the Russian military leaders are enthusiastically prosecuting the war.
Putin does give a shit a out Russia’s interest. He only cares about his own interests. If he cared about Russian interests, he wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine.
