Sometimes it seems like maybe we should have had it out with Russia in 1963. The number of bombs was comparatively small and the means of delivery comparatively primitive -- compared with today...or even ten years after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Much of the Eastern seaboard would have suffered hits, as well as parts of the South and some cities in the Rust Belt. But the nation overall would have survived. And the Soviet Union would have been ultimately destroyed. Life today would be very different, and probably much better.
