We had better hope Putin is replaced by a competent autocrat.

Russia as a failed state is not a pretty picture to contemplate. We came close under Yeltsin.

There is no reason to believe any replacement of Putin would be any less committed to Russia’s well-being and very properly care zero about the preferences of other countries. The person in question runs Russia. Total focus must be on Russia for him.

It’s always wise to remember that money is pieces of paper with ink on them. It has value only so long as counterparties concur there is value in those pieces of paper.

Barrels of oil, or cubic meters of natural gas, in contrast, contain joules of energy. That item does not care at all about the attitude of counterparties. It’s absolute. Not opinion dependent.

Russia’s wealth is rather more concrete than pieces of paper with ink on them.
