“Putin is taking an awful chance though.”
It’s not only the USA. We have British PM who desperately wants to be the next reincarnation of Churchill.
We have leaders from Poland to Bulgaria who grew up under the Russian boot.
If one of the European NATO powers decides to get it, it can escalate very quickly.
Some Turkish airforce plane entering Ukraine airspace.
Not sure whats going on there.
No doubt FR is not the only US site they are posting on
Lots of private planes taking off from Kyiv. The rich are fleeing.
Good observation. I figure that will be a good indicator for Taiwan also.
I wonder if any of Putin’s keyboard warriors have just discovered that with war they have to become actual warriors.
It would be fun to see the look on their face when the sergeant hands them a rifle and tells them to ship out to a mud pit in the the Donbass.
I read a book called "The Great Game" about the British and Russian expansion and conflict in Central Asia. The Russian playbook has been the same for 300 years: Manufacture a crisis related to a country on their border, claim that Russian people there are being oppressed, then send in troops to "protect" them. Then repeat with the next region now on the border.
26 percent of Americans wan’t the US involved in a major way. Pick up a gun and go fight.
Well, we are going to see if the Ukrainian army/people will fight or surrender (like Afghan army).
I think they will fight. We will see.
Javelin’s could be crucial.

The rich are fleeing.

When the going gets tough the rich get going.
It's not too late. We could halo him in over the Donbass.
And Max Boot, that guy has been wanting Americans to fight Russians for years. Send the two of them in.
It is not in Putin’s nature to launch a full on assault or invasion, or do anything that is expected by the hyperventilating DC denizens. He is very, very patient and a student of Sun Tzu. “Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”
Also those paying attention will notice Putin is doing a paper trail for everything overt that he does (covert is another matter).
He signed agreements with DPR/LPR for military assistance, and waited for them to officially request defense assistance.
DPR/LPR claim the entire two provinces but only hold one-third.
That’s why I think Putin will initially come in with military forces alongside LPR/DPR in attacks on Ukrainian forces within that other two-thirds of the “independent” regions.
When Ukraine inevitably involves its own forces outside that two-thirds (in the rest of Ukraine) in countering the Russian attack, then Putin will consider the war to be “widened” and perhaps go on to take the rest of Ukraine.
That’s all fine but it’s still not our problem. None of the Euros are our friends.
The Dnieper line would seem to be a more natural border. Like the Rhine between France and Germany.
With a change in regime in the Ukraine, Hunter Biden is going to need to find a new source for “consulting” gigs. Trying really hard to care.
“That’s hardly a fair statement. At the time no one knew just what Hitler had in mind and the Ukrainians had suffered millions of starvation deaths at the hands of Stalin. They simply didn’t know that Hitler would be as bad or worse.”
Yeah, I don’t think too many of them had read “Mein Kampf.”
Nice digs.
“But also, “real” FR people who thought Russia wouldn’t invade. They lacked common sense.”
Well, I’m a real FReeper, and I said I didn’t think he’d invade, mainly because I thought he’d be able to get much of what he wanted vis-à-vis Ukraine by bullying and threatening, because Zelensky sure seemed to be having second thoughts about getting tough with him, if for no other reason than to stall for time.
Now that it looks like the invasion will begin in earnest, I hope Ukraine kicks some serious butt. I don’t think Ukraine will prevail against the invasion, but it will make any Russian occupation so painful and costly to the Russians that it could lead to Putin’s ouster. Russia will win the invasion, but lose the occupation. Ukrainians are no slouches when it comes to fighting.
In any event, it is not our fight.
