I know about that. They locked up something like 35,000 political dissidents for protesting the war. J. Edgar Hoover got his start as a leg breaker for Wilson. He was a thug that grabbed these people and forced them into camps and prisons.
But Lincoln did way worse than that. He locked up state officials, newspaper editors, and anyone else who criticized him. He even locked up a US Congressman.
He issued an arrest warrant for Chief Justice Taney of the Supreme court. When you are attempting to arrest members of the Supreme court, you've crossed over into dictator territory.
