The Tianenmen Square reference is appropriate

I was referring to the pre-crackdown goings on in Tianenmen Square.

You seem fixated on the post-crackdown massacre.

I understand why that might be. However massive the importance of the pre-crackdown goings on in Tianenmen Square, and they were massively important, the post-crackdown massacre that took place there tends to loom proportionally larger in the minds of many, perhaps most, around the world.

Tienanmen Square is not remembered here or particularity in mainland China for its attempt to overthrow Deng’s rule.

What happened before the massacre is unimportant, since it did nothing except get thousands of people murdered. And that’s what the Chinese people remember to this day.

There are any number of demonstrations, even here in the US, that are far more pertinent than the Chinese example, like the gatherings on the Capitol Mall almost a decade ago etc.
