Review: China’s Anti-American ‘Battle at Lake Changjin’ Is the Worst Movie of 2021
Breitbart ^ | 12/27/2021 | David Ng

First, the bad news. China’s super-sized propaganda The Battle at Lake Changjin is one of the highest grossing movies of the year, raking in more than $900 million in less than three months if we’re to trust official CCP figures, which we can’t and shouldn’t, but more on that later. It was the No. 1 movie at the global box office until Spider-Man: No Way Home surpassed it this weekend.

The three-hour Korean War epic has easily trounced other Hollywood blockbusters to cement Commie-wood’s ascendance as a movie industry ready to dominate the world. The movie is allegedly so popular in China that a sequel is already in production. Be afraid.

Now for the good news. The Battle at Lake Changjin is terrible, awful, and at times laughably inept — so bad in fact that it took me several attempts to finish it and I have a high tolerance for long, foreign-language movies.

Of course, it is pro-communist, anti-American propaganda to its core, but that’s not why it’s bad. I expect a movie commissioned and backed by a genocidal communist dictatorship to be anti-American, and the filmmakers — three credited directors are responsible for this monstrosity — exceeded my expectations.

Clownish propaganda? Color me surprised.

I’m still waiting for Michael Caine to be interviewed about this film. He was not at the Chosin Reservoir, but he was a working class yute at the time, was drafted, and found himself with the Royal Fusiliers at the business end of Chinese human wave attacks in Korea. If anyone sees an MC interview about this, please post a link.

As a teen of my good friend’s father was a Marine in Korea. He didn’t talk publicly about it, but my friend and his brother would relay stories they heard.

Chinese used human-wave tactics, They didn’t have enough rifles, but they had plenty of bodies, so when one guy was killed, they had back-ups following behind just to pick up the rifle and keep pushing forward. What was shocking to the American GIs was how many were killed - thousands upon thousands. There were mountains of dead chinese soldiers. They were amazed the Chinese Communists were willing to sacrifice so many of their own people.

Between Mao’s idea to kill peasants! We have millions more, and, that many of the “Chinese” were actually Koreans that had fought for the Chinese in WWII, the Chinese just didn’t care.

I heard similar stories from the older men who served:

When the waves hit the concertina wire, the front man would throw his rifle in the air and lay down on top of the wire. He, of course, would be trampled, but the waves kept moving.

American machine guns were overheating from all the constant firing. Barrels so hot they couldn’t be touched.

And, yes, Truman should have given MacArthur the nukes for that group before they crossed the Yalu River.

It will probably win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Picture.

> They were amazed the Chinese Communists were willing to sacrifice so many of their own people.

The commies were using the former nationalist troops that had jumped ship near the end of the civil war and wanted to be on the winning side(or at least survive). In their minds it was literally killing two birds with one stone.

My sister-in-law’s husband was there in the Marines when the Chinese attacked. It was just as you said.

Human waves after waves. They shot them down and more came, some with clubs. rocks or what ever they could find to attack the Americans.

China, not long before had just captured the mainland and had plenty of excess male mouths to feed. So they sent them to Korea.

He said he walked across Korea, back and forth about five times.
When he was finally relieved to return to the USA, he got on the ship and refused to get off at any port of call they made. They went the long route to Africa and Europe.

Our Marines and soldiers were outnumbered 10:1 or even 20:1 in some cases.

The fact that the Chicoms were bent on annihilating them but could not do so in a toe-to-toe battle is something I consider to be a victory of the highest order and something to be proud of...as I am sure those men who were involved were. I don’t really care what the flag ranks involved think or don’t think about it!

Well, we know the Chicoms are big into propaganda and eat it for breakfast, so they will propagandize. I admit I would feel better if I knew that 99.99% of high school or college age students will give a blank stare at the words “Chosin Reservoir” but...can’t do much about that...

Yes. They didn’t trust them. The lives of those tens of thousands of dead mean meant absolutely zip to them.

Like you said, two birds with one stone.

Yes. McCarthy was spot on. All these years, I have suspected he was getting information from the Venona transcripts. It has never been verified, but his info was always right on target.

It would seem the movie industry in The PRC is not nearly so reticent about offending us as the corporate greedbags here are about offending them.

My step dad was there in an USAF intel unit - he told me that MacArthur wanted to lay down a mile wide strip of Cobalt 60 to kill them as they crossed it and keep them on their side of the Yalu - when Truman heard the request, he fired the General.

They were either going to be killed in battle or shot for not going into battle. Not much of a choice there.

Soviets did the same thing at Stalingrad. Either die fighting the Germans or we'll shoot you.

China has made some top-notch historical dramas, and even some pretty good modern comedies up through the early years of Xi Jinping. Now their film and TV industries are being reminded that they exist to advance the interests of the state, and quality writing is becoming subservient to the party’s messaging. The Wolf Warrior films were rather stupid - this one sounds even worse.
