The kicker is Boston traffic is just as congested now as it was then.
I actually think the Big Dig was a huge improvement to downtown Boston. Especially getting out to Logan coming from the north. Adding the Ted Williams tunnel was huge. That expressway used to block going over to the North End too.
The biggest winner was the Boston Bayside Hotel. They started building it when the elevated expressway was right behind it. A few years later there was a park.
