This is my response to a dear friend of my family that is trapped within the people’s Republic of Seattle when inquiring about the camps in the Northern Territory of Australia:
This is a bit unclear. There is a strong element of truth. It does appear many are now in quarantine, but it never actually mentions force in moving the people. I believe these towns are in aboriginal land (similar to an Indian reservation).
If the tribal elders were in favour of their people entering quarantine then most would willing enter it as a way to slow or stop the spread in their community, also they would receive dignified treatment while there.
I’ve seen four articles about this and all are missing the key element of force or arrest. Two of the articles included things that were entirely disingenuous.
Facts:
The quarantine camp is real
It does not seem to even have a fence or guard (at least not in any traditional sense)
No actual indication of force used
Appears to be tribal land
The people involved seem to come from about 8-10 closely related families that are at most close cousins to each other
Most aboriginals live very unhealthy lives and are at far greater risk from Covid
The tribal elders may have encouraged their residents to voluntarily enter quarantine
The use of the military is probably only due to close proximity
Most tribal healthcare comes either from the Royal Flying Doctor service or local military as most reservations have very poor or limited healthcare
The military falls under the federal government and not the state. Almost all problems have occurred at the state level. The federal government have been quite reasonable
The military is well respected and loved here. It is very unlikely they would act with a heavy hand
