A Texas man has been denied monoclonal antibody treatment for covid because he is white.

Earlier this year, the Texas Health and Human Services department (HHS) made monoclonal antibody treatments available to COVID patients following its Emergency Use Authorization by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February.

The state has issued tens of thousands of monoclonal antibody treatments over the past several months, but recently, thanks to a supply shortage spurred by the Biden administration, the agency has begun segregating who can receive the treatment based solely on the color of their skin.

Now, the state is only providing the treatments to “high-risk ethnicity groups,” while actively refusing to provide the same care to whites who have been diagnosed with Covid.

This is actually based in truth. The monoclonal antibodies are Experimental Use Authorization treatments and they cannot be bought on the open market, they can only be given by authorized government providers to patients meeting the program qualifications . If you do not meet the qualifications, it's hard to get them. it is also easy to deny treatment if the provider so chooses on the basis that you do not meet protocol. Actually happened to me.

I work in H.C. worked a Code Blue on a 19 patient...for 55 min's..

He died...and all the people in the code the next day were offered REGN's tx...

White, Black, Red, Brown...it did not matter.

I declined....

The treatment is supposedly only effective within a window of 8-10 days..I think.

Eligibility for monoclonal antibody treatment:

Are an adult or pediatric patient (at least 12 years of age and weighing at least 88 pounds)

Have tested positive for COVID-19

Are experiencing mild or moderate symptoms of COVID-19
Experienced your first symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 10 days

Are at high risk for having more serious symptoms of COVID-19 and/or going into the hospital (Over age 65, diabetes etc.)

Nothing about race.

Just saying. Latin X, Hispanic or what ever you want to call it, is not a scientific or biological term. Its political or cultural. Some might define it geographically. But you cannot say that Latinos have worse outcomes from COVID. Any more than you could say that New York Times readers have worse outcomes. It may be true. If you measure a lot of people you get strange and random correlations just by chance. Latinos have no shared biology. They are not a people. They are not of one ethnic group biologically. They are African, they are Mayan and Inca, the are Caucasian. But they are not like Africans, from Africa. And even that is too broad to use medically. This is not science. Its racism and its evil.

Had covid and began to see O2 sat drop from 95-97% TO 87% and some shortness of breath. Called provider to get Regeneron treatment as I was in the time window. Was told I did not meet the protocol - Not over 65, Not BMI over 25%, Not diabetic, No other high risks, Not Black or Hispanic so I did not qualify under their protocol in my state and was denied access. Was told to go to hospital for admission if things got worse. I ultimately did manage to get the Regeneron treatment just under the wire when I strangely and unexpectedly had a dramatic short term drop in height and substantial gain in weight and could document a family history of some of the high risk factors. I was very also very lucky to find an unusually rational and cooperative case worker working via Zoom.
